Mid Century Modern Nautica Landscape of Boats and Wharf in Acrylic on Paper Vibrant mid century landscape by California artist Bertram Spencer (American, 1918-1992). Three sailboats bob in the vivid aqua water with wharf with billowy clouds high above. The reflections off the water add depth and interest to the overall composition. Signed "B Spencer" in the lower left edge. (see photo enhanced image) Presented in a new acid-free off-white mat with foamcore backing. Mat size: 24"H x 32"W Paper size: 17.25"H x 24.75"W Image size: 15.75"H x 23.75"W Provenance: Purchased as part of larger collection of artist's estate Bertram Spencer (American, 1918-1992) was an artist and art teacher originally from Talent, Oregon. Spencer studied at Pomona and Claremont Colleges, earning his Master’s in Fine Arts. He taught art at Watsonville High School from 1950 until 1972. Spencer founded the Pajaro Valley Artists Group and was best known for renovations to the Santa Cruz Museum in 1963, where he painted extensive murals of Native American History.

Tonalist paintings could also be figurative, but in them, the figure was usually out of doors or in an interior in a low-key setting with little detail. He is known to have been active as an artist from 1880 and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1894-1918. He painted mainly maritime scenes in England and Scotland, and also made several visits to the continent, to paint in France, Italy and Switzerland. From 1894 he visited the Isle of Man, and liked it so much that he moved there permanently with his family in 1911. They took up residence in Port St. Mary. James Aitken exhibited works at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute, the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Cambrian Society as well as in the provinces.
