Charles Charlay-Pompon
After the storm, the blue canoe: Impressionist plein air river scene

cira 1878

About the Item

I liked the title "After the storm" for this painting, which the artist had noted on the back of the painting, although he later changed it to "Day of the storm". It's the juxtaposition that appeals. "After the storm" makes me think of melodramtic overblown Victorian or academic compositions, and that is exactly what this work - from the same period - is not. Rather, it is a rare and subtle example of early impressionism. Painted en plein air in the banks of the Seine, its main subject is a humble blue canoe and the big sky over the river which has just brightend again. The artist who painted the work is Charles-Socrate Pompon, known as Charlay-Pompon (1836-1904). Having studied with Alexandre Rapin (1839-1889), a painter very close to Gustave Courbet, he exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1880 to 1894. In 1883, he was appointed official painter of the French Navy. I can imagine that Charles , with his obvious interest in nature and the elements, enjoyed the challenge of painting at sea! Our oil on panel dates from circa 1875-80 and is signed at the lower right. It was painted at Triel near Paris, a spot favoured by the Impressionists: Albert Marquet and Gustave Loiseau painted there, too. The size of the panel measured without its frame is 27 x 21 cm.
