(Circle of) David Cox
Rainy Landscape - Impressionist Victorian art oil painting famous weather artist

circa 1850

About the Item

A fine large oil on canvas which is attributed to circle of David Cox. It is a super evocative landscape which depicts a couple seeking shelter and man by the fire in a bivouac on a blustery rainy day. The painting is full of vitality and impressionistic colour. It is a fine period British Victorian oil painting which dates to around 1850. Richard Dorment described Cox "as the painter of sudden showers, blustery clouds, and late March winds blowing across the open countryside. The contemporary of Turner, Constable and Bonington, he ranks just below them in the hierarchy of English landscape painters. While Peter De Wint and John Sell Cotman celebrate the stability of the English landscape by painting its shady groves, gentle hills or weathered buildings, Cox's gift lies in his ability to capture nature's shifting light and restless movement with broken, flickering brush strokes" This fine large oil has all these hallmarks but is unsigned. Provenance. Sussex Collection. Samuel Hill Ltd. Condition. Large oil on canvas, image size is 36 inches by 28 inches and in excellent condition with some restoration. Framed in a gilt gallery frame 42 inches by 34 inches. In excellent condition. David Cox (29 April 1783 – 7 June 1859) was an English landscape painter, one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape artists and an early precursor of Impressionism. He is considered one of the greatest English landscape painters, and a major figure of the Golden age of English watercolour although he also painted over 300 oil paintings. u

  • Fountains at Pernes Les Fountaines France Impressionist landscape oil painting
    By Sylvia Gosse
    Located in London, GB
Do you like fountains? Sylvia Gosse certainly did, as the location of this painting is the French town of Pernes Les Fountaines in Provence. The little town has 40 or more fountains, big and small, all serviced by the river Nesque. Gosse was a Camden Town/Sickert School artist and painted this painting circa 1912. It depicts a nocturnal landscape scene with three fountains. The fountains are beautifully illuminated with coloured lights and a large crowd on the banks of the water seem to have gathered to watch this spectacle, some having brought their own chairs. The coloured lights cast beautiful tones of pinky red on to the on lookers. Across the water and beyond a tree covered hill stands an impressive columned building. The vibrant colouring, impasto and brushwork are all superb. This is an excellent example of Gosse's work and Sickert's influence as her mentor and life long freind are evident. Signed lower left and also signed and titled verso. Provenance. Private collection of Camden Town Group...
