About the Item
This is one of a series of paintings inspired by the song “Small Hours” John Martyn
Oil on board. 80 x 53cm
It is framed in a black gallery frame with bronze edges. ( Framed size 86 x 59cm )
The paint was applied with a pallet knife, thick impasto, then scraped off to leave the board stained with the solid blocks of colour. Some of the areas were then blended with the back of the knife. This study became the basis of more work on the same theme. The evocative small hours of the day have a particular stillness and serenity which is present in the absence of thinking.
This painting is one of a set of four in the same style and colour pallet. This one "Small Hours Study I" was the first in the series to try to capture the particular atmosphere of the small hours and the softness of the track by John Martyn.

I work mainly from my studio, which used to be my living room. I consider myself to be very fortunate to have such a large space with loads of natural light. I have lived by the sea for most of my life, we are blessed here on the North East coast, there are literally miles of stunning beaches, cliffs and coves. Most of my current work is inspired by this and although many of my paintings are from imagination, it’s a well informed imagination as I walk on the beaches most days, rain, snow, wind and sunshine. I welcome visitors to my studio, fellow artists, collectors, gallery owners and art lovers are all welcome. Make an appointment here and I’ll get the coffee pot on.
