"The Packet Sunbeam Of Boston Picking Up The Liverpool Pilot In Heavy Gale"

1850

About the Item

Dear Mr. Train It was very nice seeing you yesterday and I take this opportunity of thanking you for purchasing the SUNBEAM from me. The information that I promised you at that time is as follows. The SUNBEAM was a ship of 843 tons and was built for Augustus Hemenway of Boston in 1845 at Medford Mass by Paul Curtiss. She was wrecked in 1879 having been sold foreign in about 1861. The painting itself descended from the Captain of the vessel at the time this painting was done, Captain George W. Putnam who commanded vessels out of Boston and later New York from the 1830's to the 60's. I hope that the above information will prove helpful and increase your enjoyment of this very fine marine / maritime painting. Yours Sincerely, Evan Wm. Petley-Jones
