Edmund Darch Lewis
Edmund Darch Lewis was born in 1835 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and lived there throughout his life. Lewis was one of the most popular landscape painters of Philadelphia during the late 19th century. He studied with artist Paul Weber from 1850–55 and used watercolors to capture marine and river scenes along the Eastern Coast. He exhibited extensively during his career, including at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, National Academy of Design, Brooklyn Art Association, Boston Athenæum and Boston Art Club. Lewis’s paintings are found in museums, galleries, and private collections throughout the United States, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, United States Department of State, Bowdoin College, Worcester Art Museum, Samuel Merritt Hospital in Oakland, California and Bostonian Society. In Sailing Along the Coast, Darch uses gouache to bring to life the rugged coastline and the choppy ocean surf in this exquisitely painted marine scene.

- "Sunrise on the Marsh" - Framed 19th Century Antique Landscape PaintingLocated in New Orleans, LAI wish I could figure out who this super-talented artist of the 1800's "Mort R.", was. He painted this gorgeous swamp scene in 1872, but his signature did not include his last name and so we don't know who he was! At any rate, if you have ever visited Louisiana, or the Carolina coast, or even parts of Texas, you will understand how beautifully the artist has captured the special light coming up over a swamp early in the morning. A pirogue has been pulled up at the edge of a small island. The sun is just peeking over the horizon, gently shedding its subtle light. Comes in an exquisite gilt and plaster 19th...Category

- Mid Century Tonalist Landscape of California Country RoadLocated in Soquel, CABeautiful tonalist landscape of California foothills and country road. Signed and dated "CKP" and "'69" lower right corner. Presented in rustic wood frame with eggshell mat under nonglare glass. Image size: 18.25"H x 13.25"W. Framed size: 23.5"H x 18"W. California Tonalism was art movement that existed in California from circa 1890 to 1920. Tonalist are usually intimate works, painted with a limited palette. Tonalist paintings are softly expressive, suggestive rather than detailed, often depicting the landscape at twilight or evening, when there is an absence of contrast. Tonalist paintings could also be figurative, but in them, the figure was usually out of doors or in an interior in a low-key setting with little detail. Tonalism had its origins in the works of the French Barbizon school and in the works of American painters who were influenced by them. California Tonalism was born when the emphasis in California landscape painting passed from the grand landscapes of works like those of Thomas Hill and William Keith's early career, to more intimate views of a domesticated landscape. At the same time, the parallel Pictorialist Photography...Category
