Edwin Henry Boddington
Victorian landscape painting of the River Thames with horses watering

About the Item

A very atmospheric scene of a horse and cart crossing the river Wey (a tributary of the river Thames) under a beautiful twilight sky. There is wonderful detail and light with the artist's characteristic use of delicate brushwork to depict the feathery foliage of the trees. Presented in its original frame, this is a really handsome piece by a well collected artist. Edwin Henry Boddington (1836-1905) Evening on the River Wey Signed Oil on canvas 12 x 22 inches excluding the frame 19 x 28 inches with the frame Edwin Henry Boddington was an English landscape painter during the Victorian era, and a member of the Williams family of painters. He was the son of the well-known landscape painter Henry John Boddington, and he learned to paint from his father. Boddington exhibited at the Royal Academy (11 works), the British Institution (25 works), and Suffolk Street (45 works). He painted mainly views on the Thames River that are illuminated either by sunset or moonlight. Most of his river scenes are painted in very dark greens and browns, and many resemble some of the earlier works of his father. He is thought to have died about 1905, possibly in Australia where his sons Percy Reginald Boddington (1866-1936) and Henry Frederick Boddington (1870-1940) had emigrated. Examples of his work hang in the Glasgow Museum, Rotherham Museum, Reading Town Hall and the Ealing Central Library.

  • English 19thC Victorian Shipping scene with fishing boats in the English Channel
    By William Anslow Thornley
    Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honourable mention in 1881 and a third place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...
