About the Item

Signed lower left, 'F. Laval' for Fernand Laval (French, 1886-1966) and dated 1948. Born in Dordogne, Fernand Laval arrived in Paris at the age of 26 to study art and, during the early part of his career, painted beside Maurice Utrillo in Montmartre. From 1920, he exhibited frequently including in Paris at the Salon d'Automne and the Société des Artistes Indépendants. Between 1927 and 1929, Laval traveled extensively, exhibiting throughout the Netherlands and Brussels. Upon his return to Paris, he focused on painting the landscapes around Montmartre, the Canal Saint-Martin and Les Halles. Over the course of a long artistic career, Laval exhibited widely and with success including at the Musée d'Art Moderne, the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d'Automne. The artist's work is held in private and public collections world-wide including the permanent collections of museums in New York, Philadelphia and Rotterdam. We are pleased to offer this luminous oil landscape showing an old tow-path beside a gently flowing river beneath a clouded blue sky featuring particularly delicate handling of the cast light and reflections by this well-listed French Impressionist. Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...
