George Luks
Forest Landscape

About the Item

Landscape by George Luks (1867-1933) Oil on canvas 11 x 14 inches unframed (27.94 x 35.56 cm) Signed lower left Description: George Luks was an American artist originally born in Pennsylvania who devoted himself to the artistic ideals of the Ashcan School, which he participated in as an urban realist. His rejection of established academic ideals characterized much of his artistic practice, leading him to join a group of artists called "The Eight" that advocated for a more democratized art world in which the ideals of the Academy did not reign. He shares much of his stylistic developments with the likes of John Sloan, William Glackens, and Everett Shin. Luks shares stylistic elements with the likes of Manet and Velazquez, who he noted in his studies as being highly influential to the development of his modeling techniques. In this oil landscape painting George Luks expertly balances his signature realistic modeling technique with a refined use of color to form a soft, organic forest scene. His impressionistic brush strokes shine through the canvas, leaving much of the painting unresolved, but not unfinished. Luks, in performing a deconstruction of the landscape he painted, created a unique image of bright, vibrant colors that easily draws the eye in.

In this prototypical oil painting, Walter Launt Palmer's title as "the painter of the American winter" can be vividly and brilliantly seen. As an impressionist painter that emerged at the turn of the 20th century, Palmer took great interest in the picturesque American landscape, though he particularly focused on the rendering of this landscape glistening with snow. His pictures evoke an unreplicable natural serenity, and in this oil painting "The Winter Scene...
