Glenn O. Coleman
From a Balcony

Circa 1928

About the Item

Exhibited: New York Society of Artist Sid Deutsch Owings-Dewey Fine Art It's Skyscraper City: 1918. The artist depicts a simultaneous interior and exerterior view.. Based on Coleman's painting The Mirror" 1927. Whitney Museum of American Art, I am dating this work Circa 1928. There is new skyscraper construction in this work and a greater density of building clustered. The condition is good. There is scattered light craquelure. A layer of old varnish is dulling the color. A light cleaning will make the work lighter and pop. Presently, the work comes off looking a bit dark in natural indoor lighting. It's best viewed best when illuminated with a direct top key light to bring out detail in the shadow areas of the painting. Work is framed Signature: Signed lower right: Coleman in Green

  • Doledrum ( Industrial Environmental Pollution
    Located in Miami, FL
Out of many come one. A huge back mountain is formed out of scores of gas spewing smokestacks. The foreboding back mass fills most of the pictorial area. As one gets closer to the canvas, the complexity of the mass if revealed in low on contrast as we see the diverse variety of the stacks with accompanying petrochemical architecture. Above the stacks, plums of air pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides rise gracefully into the atmosphere. The artist focuses less on the by-product of the stacks and more on his giant pollution machine that he has so astutely rendered. The work is mostly monochromatic but the artist has indicted a red tonality of a sunset/sunrise that offsets the charcoal blacks and grays. ______________________________________________ Submitted by Tamarind Institute Ian Davis...

Arnold Friedman studied with Robert Henri and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League in 1905 . Yet as he developed his style he abandoned the academic influence of his teacher. He started experimenting with materials and techniques. Friedmans intimate style recalls a variety of post-impressionist artists such as Pointillism of Pisarro, Vuillard and Nabis, and perhaps even Seurat. His thick application of paint has definitive textual impasto that was influenced by his trip to Paris in 1909. In "Museum Piece...
