About the Item

A fine impressionist coastal oil painting of Provincetown, MA by American impressionist artist Henry Rya MacGinnis (1874-1962). MacGinnis was born in Indiana and began his art studies under the Hoosier artists T.C. Steele, J.O. Adams and William Forsyth. After traveling to Europe for five years, he returned to the states and was chosen by William Merritt Chase to exhibit in an important show of the Philadelphia Art Club with Chase, Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt, and Ernest Lawson. He became known for his landscapes, and mural painting. Oil on masonite, signed lower right, titled on front placard and verso labels “Provincetown, Low Tide,” including an artist’s estate stamp signed by Jane Erwin MacGinnis. A date of 1924 is inscribed on verso as well. Dimensions: 16 in H x 12 in W, actual; 25.75 in H x 21.75 x 1.75 in D. Ref: 8
