This artwork titled "The Coast Near San Diego" 1949, is an oil painting on board by noted California artist Jean Martin (Eugenia Victoria Weir Martin) 1906-1986. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork (board) size is 16 x 20 inches, framed size is 24.35 x 28.35 inches. Framed in original wooden brown frame, with fabric liner. it is in excellent condition. About the artist: Eugenia "Jean" Victoria Weir Martin 1906-1986 San Diego, California Landscapes, Seascapes artist Eugenia Victoria Weir Martin was a painter and art instructor in Southern California. She was born in Tennessee on March 7, 1906. "Jean", as she was called, was brought to La Jolla, California as a small child by her parents, and remained in that area the rest of her life. Her Father was a businessman in the early stages of the development of La Jolla. He operated a General Store in the early village. They resided in "Windemere", which is now the home of the La Jolla Historical Society. At the age of 10 she studied art with a Mrs. Fletcher, an artist in residence at the 1916 California Exposition in Balboa Park. She also studied at the San Diego Academy of Fine Arts. Early in her career she also studied with Maurice Braun, Alfred Mitchell, Edward Langley and other important area artists. She had a studio on Balboa Park (most likely in Spanish Village) which was open to the public. Jean began teaching locally during World War II at Camp Callan and continued her instruction until the 1970's. As an art teacher she was featured in the December 1952 issue of "National Geographic Magazine". Jean was a Member, and Past President, of the La Jolla Art Association (1955-57). She was also a member of the Chula Vista Art Association, San Diego Watercolor Society (of which she was a Founding Member), and the San Diego County Art Association. During her career she had over 30 solo exhibitions throughout Southern California. She signed her works "Jean Martin", or "Jean V. Martin". She died in San Diego on August 4, 1986.

His studies from early youth included travel and visits to major museums in Europe. During a visit to the United States, Carlo was introduced to the Native American Indian and the rich history of the American West. He moved to Southern California in 1960 and still calls it home today. Between 1960 and today, Carlo has traveled throughout the Southwestern United States and Mexico. For many years, he lived among the Navajo and Zunis, painting a great many surreal works that embodied their legends and outlook. He also spent 2 years in Mexico living among the Huichol people in the inaccessible mountains north of Tepic, painting the Indian religion and the white man's religion as seen through Huichol eyes. Between 1979 and today, he mastered the technique and came to control it, producing a fabulous new medium base for his expressions. The evolvement of his art has show much diversification and his works can be found in prominent private and corporate collections, as well as museums both here in the United States and abroad.
