J.J. Spohler
Winter in Holland, J.J. Spohler, Oil paint/canvas, Romantic

1811-1879

About the Item

Netherlands, 1811 -1866 Jan Jacob Spohler was born in Nederhorst den Berg on November 7, 1811. He studied with JW Pieneman at the Amsterdam Academy and devoted his life to depicting the Dutch landscape. Spohler painted at the height of Dutch Romanticism and followed in the footsteps of the great master Andreas Schelfhout. Like Schelfhout, Spohler liked to paint winter or summer landscapes, capturing the atmosphere of both equally well. The artist often incorporated small groups of figures in his work, which gives us a wonderful insight into life at that time. Spohler traveled extensively through the Netherlands during his working life, living in Amsterdam, Haarlem, Brussels, The Hague, Leiden and Rotterdam. He eventually returned to Amsterdam in 1861, where he died 5 years later on June 15. Spohler's work sold well during his lifetime and he often competed for commissions with other contemporaries such as FM Kruseman (1816-1882) and Charles Leickert (1816-1907). Spohler had two sons who were both artists: JJC Spohler, who was strongly influenced by his father in his style and subject matter, and JF Spohler who chose the Dutch cityscape as a genre. Museums include: – Teylers Museum, Haarlem – Municipal Museum, Kampen
