In this painting the bright moon, partially obscured by mounting dark clouds, dramatically lights the landscape. A man rests on the bridge surveying the view, while another person sits with his animals to the left.
John Rathbone was born in the Wirral. He practised in London, Manchester and Preston as a landscape painter in both oil and watercolour. The artists George Morland and Julius Caesar Ibbetson often collaborated with Rathbone, whom painted the figures in his landscapes. Rathbone exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1785 and 1806, and also at the Society of Artists.
