John Thomas Nolf
Lovely California Landscape Painting by listed artist John Thomas Nolf, ca 1920s

1920’s

About the Item

John Thomas Nolf was born in Allentown, Pa. in 1872. He had his academic studies in Chicago at the Art Institute. He exhibited often at the Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy , the San Francisco Museum of Art and other local Chicago area venues. Nolf died in 1955. This oil on board dates to the 1920’s and is a beautifully rendered scene that is almost certainly Southern California or nearby area. Nolf utilized a soft color palette for this painting and enhanced it with confident brush strokes in the traditional American Impressionist style. There is texture to the painted surface, but not to the point of impasto. Subtle, yet boldly conceived, the painting is signed somewhat discreetly lower left. It was recently professionally cleaned to show off its colors and brushstrokes. It measures 16” x 20” and is housed in a new 22 K gold leafed American Impressionist style frame that surely enhances and expands the work. The overall framed measurements are 23” x 27” approximately. Both the frame and the painting are in excellent condition and ready to hang on the wall of your choice.
