About the Item

Woman in the garden. Romantic and full of light landscape with beautiful female figure by the Spanish artist Manuel García Blázquez. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: Unframed: (H) 89 x (W) 116 (D) 2 cm. / 35.04 x 45.67 x 0.79 in. Framed: (H) 109 x (W) 136 (D) 4 cm. / 42.91 x 53.54 x 1.57 in. Light is the protagonist in this landscape with female figure by Manuel García Blázquez; an intense and soft light that interacts with color, and the impressionist technique that defines the work of this painter. The beautiful silhouette of a woman dressed in white and the reflections of the water in the pond at the back of the garden give the scene a certain luminous dreaminess, which contrasts with the strength of the color of the flowers in the foreground. The background landscape, so timeless and lyrical, serves as the setting for a female portrait with classical reminiscences. The work is executed along the lines with exceptional mastery of technique, which is sustained by impeccable drawing and exact chromaticism. The light that emerges from the painting manages to fill the entire environment. ABOUT THE ARTIST Manuel García Blázquez (Spain-1958), self-taught training, began his career in art in 1977, when he was awarded First Prize in a competition organized by the City Council of Béjar, his hometown. From then on, he had a continuously rising development. He is currently a professional artist recognized throughout the Spanish territory. He has numerous exhibitions to his credit and has participated in several competitions in which his work has been awarded on several occasions. THE ARTIST SAYS: “I remember, in my parents' house, the balcony, open to the morning sun illuminating any daily scene, spilling its light into the interior of the dining room. Or the window facing the afternoon, transforming the kitchen environment into a spectacle of strength and color…, almost always around a balcony, or a window. There is no doubt, -now that many years have passed-, that my retina was impressed and was shaping a trend and a relentless search for beauty, dedicated to the formation and development of the necessary knowledge. The continuous work of the natural, the environment, and the nearby landscape,..., (pine forest at dawn, the Renaissance pond, the summers in the river with its spectacular reflections...), was engrossing and pleasing to the interior. The reality of the living, of the daily and known. In silence and contemplation”.

Mid 19th Century oil on canvas portrait of an Italian brigand, unsigned, in painted wood and gilt frame. The painting is a fine and fascinating rendition with plenty of wonderful character and detail to the costume, accessories, landscape and seascape. Very atmospheric and imposing much like the character it portrays. There is a trade stamp to the back of the canvas for the Paris firm of Susse Freres. The canvas is on a fine quality stretcher with 'keys'. There is an artist's name or title written on the top of the rear stretcher (see photo). Bands of brigands who populated the hills of southern Italy were steady fodder for the Romantic imagination, and their exploits were reported both factually, fancifully and artistically The painting dates from a period when France, under its then leader Napoleon III, was involved in the conflicts in the Italian states and the unification and eventual creation of the nation of Italy. An earlier and similar portrait exists of the infamous brigand Mazzocchi by Achille-Etna Michallony . Léon Cogniet...

The painting is by repute of La Comtesse de Blacas, in front of her home Château d'Ussé. Ussé was the subject of a French railroad poster issued by the Chemin de Fer de Paris à Orléans in the 1920s which may have been designed by Gaudy and this may be where the commission for this painting came about. Presented in very fine custom carved wood, gilt Florentine frame. The early 1900's were the zenith of 20th century society portraiture by the likes of Philip de László...
