Signed lower right, 'M E Rogers' for Margaret Esther Rogers (American, 1872-1961) and painted circa 1955. Original label verso bearing artist's name and titled 'Rhythms of the Sea'. This early California woman artist first studied with Frank Heath and, later, with Lorenzo Latimer and Alexander Bower. Over the course of a long career, Margaret Rogers exhibited widely and with success including at the Society of Independent Artists (1927-1928), Oakland Art Gallery (now know as Oakland Museum, 1932, 1934), the Golden Gate Exhibition (1939), the Society for Sanity in Art, California Palace of the Legion of Honor (1941) as well as in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Portland. Rogers was the recipient of numerous prizes and awards from the California State Fairs, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1941 (awards). Rogers is well-listed in relevant art reference works including Who Was Who in American Art. She was a member of the Women Painters of the West, SWA, the Bay Region Artists Association, the Salinas Fine Artists Society, the Oakland Art League, the San Francisco Women Artists and the Berkeley League of Fine Artists as well as a founding member of the Santa Cruz Art League.
