About the Item
This is a highly stylized 1952 New York State fall landscape oil on board by noted Ukrainian-American artist Mychajlo Moroz. The vintage painting has modernist tendencies that are quite unique to this artist. It is in fact identified as the “Schoharie River, Hunter”, New York. Located in the Catskills, not far from Woodstock and Windham, the area is known for its ski resorts.
Artist Mychajlo Moroz was born in the Ternopil region of Ukraine in 1904. By 1923, he was studying art at a newly formed school and later in Paris. In Paris, Moroz met Matisse, known for his vivid colors. That meeting had a lasting impact on the younger artist and influenced his love for expressive colors. By 1949 he had immigrated to New York with his wife and child. Living in New York City afforded him the opportunity to travel, first locally in New York State and then around the country. He held exhibitions of his exuberant landscapes at galleries in New York. In 1962 his exhibition was written up in the New York Times and noted as an expressionist artist.
This painting is an exuberant work in oil that shows the great impasto techniques that Moroz had come to master. The perspective down Schoharie Creek is enlivened by the array of fall color that the area is so well known. The brushstrokes are confidently placed in an almost expressionist manner. Texture is a key element to Moroz’s painting style. The foliage is thickly painted while the creek is generally flatter, adding to the sense of depth within the overall work.
The painting itself is oil on board, 12” x 16”. It is in very good condition. The backside is also coated with various paint layers and strokes. The work is signed both on the front and the back, which includes the actual location and the date 1952. The period wood frame has a gold colored finish and is broad enough to nicely show off the painting. The frame shows a few signs of age here and there but it is very serviceable and complimentary with the actual painting. The overall framed measurements are 16 1/2” x 20 1/2”.
