About the Item

A fine impressionist landscape oil painting by American artist Nellie Augusta Knopf (1875-1962). Knopf was born in Chicago, IL, and studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago where she studied under John Vanderpoel and Frederick Free. After graduating with honors in 1900, she taught art at Illinois Woman's College in Jackson for 43 years. Only five feet tall and hard of hearing, she was a determined artist who never let her deafness interfere with her painting or teaching career. During the summers 1910 to 1917 she studied in Maine with Charles Woodbury. Beginning in 1921 her summers and holidays were spent on painting trips to the West. She sketched in Wyoming, Arizona, Montana, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, and California, and became well known as a painter of mountain, pueblos, seascapes, and other outdoor scenes that brought her international recognition. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, with a partial exhibition label on verso, titled on brass plaque which reads “On The Dunes Near Provincetown, Nellie A. Knopf (1875-1962), Restored in Honor of Helen Dinsmore Nichol, Class of 1915, by her son George D. Nichol,” as well as an inscribed note attached with the title and “MacMurray College Collection,” and housed in a deep or rose gold giltwood frame. Lindenmuth was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and later worked in Provincetown and Rockport, Massachusetts, with a home in St. Augustine. Born in 1883 in Denmark to artistically inclined parents, Johann Berthelsen would become a widely successful singer, teacher, and painter. After his parents divorced, his mother brought Berthelsen and his siblings with her to the United States in 1890, eventually settling in Wisconsin. At eighteen, Berthelsen moved to Chicago in the hope of becoming an actor, but a friend at the Chicago Musical College convinced him to audition at his school. Berthelsen received a full scholarship and enrolled at the college, where he was awarded the Gold Medal twice. After graduating, he had an active career traveling across the United States and Canada performing in operas and concerts, before joining the voice faculty at his alma mater in 1910.
