He attended an oral program near his home and later transferred to the Lexington School for the Deaf when he was six. Early in his childhood, his love for drawing, painting and studying became apparent, and as an adult, he continued his studies in New York at the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, the Art Students League and the Parsons School of Design. In Paris, France he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Bob Freiman was especially focused on painting portraits and figures in motion in various mediums, especially the mixed-media combination of watercolor, acrylic and pen. Among his subjects were acrobats, ballet dancers, cyclists and other athletes. He as well focused on abstracts for a time, discovering new media in his works with quick brushwork and expressive movements. In the latter part of his career, his style became abstract and surreal with images of metaphysical landscapes with architectural elements such as arches, towers, pyramids and castles floating in the air. The famed art critic Pierre Rouve wrote: “It is therefore refreshing to see them revitalized by the colourist wealth and virile handwriting of Robert Freiman, probably the best American water-colorist since John Marin. He worked in Provincetown and Nantucket and regularly exhibited there. He showed at Doll & Richards gallery of Boston alongside John Chetcuti, Lloyd Goodrich, Tod Lindenmuth, William Meyerowitz, Dwight Shepler, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, Stanley Woodward, Andrew Wyeth, and others. His work bears the influence of the mid century school of Paris in particular Jean Carzou. He was a regular exhibitor at the Sidewalk Art Show in New York beginning in the 1930s. Later in his career, his paintings became abstract infused with metaphysical landscapes and elements of architectural fantasy. Through the 1940"s Freiman had numerous exhibits at Doll & Richards, and beginning in mid1950s his paintings began showing in prestigious galleries in New York, Paris, London, and Zurich, and in many galleries across the U.S.A. including a memorable exhibition entitled "The Silent World of Robert Freiman: His Paintings and Portraits", held in 1977 at the Edward J. Brown and Associates Studio in NYC. Robert Freiman’s paintings are in the collections of some of most notable world-wide’s “Who is Who” collectors of the age, like James Baldwin, Tennessee Williams, Georges Braque, Henri-Georges Clouzot, Anne Bancroft, Peter Ustinove, Dirk Bogard, Simone Signoret, C.P. Coulandris, Edward Sarnoff, Henry Ruhl, Lee V. Eastman. In addition to the notable private collections, Freiman’s paintings are held in the permanent collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of the City of New York, the National Academy of Design, the New Britain Museum in Connecticut, the Museum of Santa Barbara in California, Columbia Museum of Art in South Carolina, the Georgia Museum of Art, the Art Association of Newport, Rhode Island, Le Musee Municipal de Saint-Paul de Vence, France. • Jewish Mexican Avant Garde Fiesta of Guadalupe Expressionist Oil Painting
    By Yonia Fain
    Located in Surfside, FL
Genre: Avant-Garde Subject: Abstract Mexican Landscape Medium: Oil Surface: Canvas Country: Mexico Dimensions: Yonia Fain Oil, 1947 Although this oil painting’s subject is predominantly abstract, there is a faint echo of a figural shape at its center. A figure wearing Tefillin, An organic form appears to be pinned to a hammer shaped object, reminiscent of a crucifix. This tool may be a reference to one of the Soviet Union’s symbols. Moreover, it is likely a direct reference to the persecution Fain faced as a Russian Jew in Bolshevik Russia. The contrast between colors, geometric lines, and organic curves is indicative of Fain’s collaboration with Diego Rivera, as well as the time he spent in Mexico. The primary hues communicate the hardship the artist underwent and his cathartic ability to reproduce those emotions through paint. In addition to being a renowned artist and award-winning poet, Yonia Fain is among the few survivors to triumph over the turmoil of the 20th century. Fain’s abundant body of artwork and poetry pays tribute to the hardship many experienced during the Russian Revolution, Nazi invasion of Poland, and World War II. The persecution Fain experienced forced him to immigrate to several countries including China, Mexico, and the United States. Yonia Fain was born in Russia in 1914. When he was only 10-years-old, he and his family fled from the Bolshevik Revolution to Poland. There he pursued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and hoped to continue his education in Paris. He was awarded B.A. and M.F.A. degrees from the University of Poland. In 1939, the artist and his wife Helen moved to Warsaw when the town they lived in, Vilna, became occupied by the Soviet Union. Although they managed to escape the Nazi Holocaust, Fain was apprehended by Soviet military...

  • Judaica Oil Painting Altneuschul Maharal Synagogue Prague
    By Hovik Muradian
    Located in Surfside, FL
14.5 X 16.5 with frame HOVIK MURADIAN Born in 1964 in Yerevan, Armenia ,he now lives and works in Prague, Czech Republic. His pictures are in private collections in Germany, France, America and other countries. Hovik Muradian was born in 1964 in Yerevan, Armenia, within the view of the biblical Mt. Ararat, in the land of the sun, mountains, rocks, and savanna grass, in the country with a fate similar to that of every small country controlled by a more powerful country, in the country with the history of struggle for independence. Back in 1964, Armenia was a part of the Soviet Union and was called the Armenian Socialist Republic. After the tragic earthquake in 1988, Hovik went on a quest for a new life outside his homeland. He found it in the Czech Republic where he has been living since 1992. He has a nice family and a studio close to his flat in one of the Prague suburbs where he paints, and he exhibits his paintings around the world. Yet, his dark eyes keep looking through the web of nostalgia, his blood is diluted with meditation, and his romantic heart searches for angular colors of brightness. But I may be totally wrong. I am just trying to find an alibi for my headline. Hovik Muradian was raised in a family where his father, academic painter Shavarsh Muradian (1936), whose favorite style of painting was landscape, initiated Hovik’s artistic education (the School of Arts of Jakob Kojoian, and the College of Arts of Panos Terlemezian in Yerevan from 1976 to 1984). Cultural inspiration, music, theatre, literature etc. are probably the legacy of the school; we can find symbols of the mentioned arts both in his early and later paintings. However, what the painter soon left behind was the technique of paint applying. His impasto paintings quickly changed into delicately color and delimited areas. The delimitation of shapes is a typical element in Muradian’s paintings. Sometimes, the area is geometrically divided into right-angle shapes, other times the painter seems to use different arches to make them in an abstract grouping of matter. However, he never stops there. In his compositions, we can find a part of a figure, nude, musical instrument, or common item. His genre is figurative abstraction. Rationality that forces us to meditate can be found only in his later paintings. His canvases are full of technical artifacts symbolizing time, order, as well as mystery, a pursuit to learn, search, and ask questions. His paintings clearly show what kind of questions the author asks. Qualification: 1976 - 1980: Graduation from the School of Arts of Jacob Kojoian, Department of Paintings, Yerevan 1980 - 1984: Graduation from the Collage of Arts of P.Terlemezian, Department of Paintings, Yerevan Single Exhibitions to Date: 1985 The House of Armenian Journalists, Yerevan (Armenia) 1994 Russian House...
