About the Item
A charming painting by Rudolf Bertelsen (1828 - 1921) of two boys from the Herlufsholm Boarding School, dressed in their school uniforms, fishing on a sunny summer day, in the river Susån, which is located right next to the school. Oil on canvas. Signed "R.B". A tergo with text "Herlufsholm 1894". Set in an original gilded frame.
Rudolf Vilhelm Valdemar Bertelsen was a Danish landscape painter who started his art studies in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1846. Further on he trained as a drawing teacher with G.F Hetsch (1788-1864) at the Academy.
He started with landscape painting quite late, when he was about 40 years old. He exhibited a number of times at the Salon Charlottenborg Art Exhibitions between 1878-94
From 1857 and for 45 years onwards he worked as a drawing teacher at Herlufsholm Boarding school which is located just outside Naestved, about 90km southwest of Copenhagen.
Bertelsen predominantly, painted motifs from the Næstved region, in his last 10 years also some flower pictures. His art was gentle and careful, borne of a great love for nature and for artistic work. He is described as having a bright and winning temperament, and he was loved by everyone, both by his students and by the many artists who went in and out of the hospitable home, including A. Brendekilde, L. A. Ring, Gottschalk, Ludvig Find, Svend Hammershøi and others.
Herlufsholm School is a private boarding school by the River Suså in Næstved and is Denmarks oldest and finest boarding school. It was founded in 1565 as a boarding school for "sons of noble and other honest men" on the site of a former Benedictine monastery from the 12th century.
