Rutger Hiemstra
Evening Sky - 21st Century Contemporary Oil Painting by Rutger Hiemstra

2019

About the Item

In February 2017 we met Rutger Hiemstra. I visited him in his studio in Paterswolde. Beautifully situated on the edge of a nature reserve, Rutger Hiemstra's studio is located in the attic of the house where he lives with his young family. In this studio, with large skylights, he works on various subjects: still lifes, portraits and, for example, grand cloudy skies. In addition, he can also be found outside regularly to make small 'plein-air' paintings. Sitting outside for a few hours and painting a nice painting, that "couldn't be better", according to Hiemstra. Rutger worked in Denmark, Switzerland and England, he also likes to work in his own environment and is easily inspired by simple and daily "things". He also thinks his self-styled garden gate is a wonderful subject. Inspiration enough, but time is too short to draw and paint all subjects that pass by. During the introduction to these artists, it was striking how passionate Rutger is. A self-composed book by artists who inspire him and whose work he carefully studies is always within reach in his studio. When leaving, Rutger still shows how he builds up his still lifes. A self-made table top with potatoes "scattered" on it. This is a while downstairs in the living room, and it changes here and there. Eventually, if he really likes the composition, he will paint it.
