Waiting for Spring is an original oil painting by landscape artist Shirley Kirkcaldy. Painted from sketches and drawings made on Dartmoor, it was inpired by the solitary appearance of a lone hawthorn tree on a day when the light presented the landscape in a soft colour palette. Shirley Kirkcaldy, painter and illustrator, is available for sale online and in our art gallery at Wychwood Art.Shirley’s work explores the natural landscape, in particular that of Dartmoor, where she lives, and the southwest coastlines she visits regularly. Her practice involves drawing in the landscape and working intuitively and expressively in a range of media, predominantly oil but often incorporating oil stick, wax, acrylic, ink or charcoal. Combining visual notes, made on location, with memory and materials in her studio, ideas are investigated and possibilities explored until she feels that something beyond the obvious has been achieved. Drawn to the edge of places where light and atmosphere feature significantly, her work aims to depict a sense of place and time where final images become less documentary and thus open to viewer interpretation. Shirley’s work is represented by several southwest galleries and in private collections in the UK, Europe, USA and New Zealand. She is a member of the Southwest Academy of Fine Arts, exhibits widely and has been a featured artist in Devon Life, Dartmoor Magazine and The Artist publications.

  • Stepping Out, Atmospheric art, Semi Abstract Modern Landscape Painting, Blue Art
    By Caroline Chappell
    Located in Deddington, GB
Stepping Out is an original abstracted landscape painting by artist Carole Chappell. This atmospheric landscape painting features abstracted form and gestural marking making alongside a beautiful use of pattern. The artist comments - "Living in the heart of England my local landscape includes bridle paths and drovers’ roads, ancient burial sites and stone circles, tracks and old hollow ways. Walking these well-worn paths, stopping to look listen and draw, I feel totally connected to the natural world, the earth and sky. Capturing that moment is the essence of my work. Using written notes as well as drawings to record that changing, moving place and time I can then recreate that sensation on canvas in the studio." Caroline Chappell's original paintings are available for sale online with Wychwood Art. Artist, Caroline Chappell's works have been carefully selected for sale by our Chief Art...

"A native of New Orleans, Jill Hackney studied painting at The Cleveland Institute of Art and Louisiana State University, where she earned her BFA. She is a founding member and twice president of Studio 801, an artists’ cooperative in Baton Rouge. She was also recently selected as a Fellow of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation for her work as President of the NUNU Arts and Culture Collective. Best known for her still life and landscape work, her focus is to show light’s impact on her subjects through layers of vertical and linear strokes. Using the natural texture of the wood on which she paints, each painting is approached with a sense of nostalgia. The end effect is a union of the senses, which awakens feelings of joy, serenity, and peace. Jill currently functions as the Director of International Communications for NUNU Arts and Culture Collective." "Echo 1", Pair of Impressionist...

  • Neucleus - 21st Century, Contemporary Art, Abstract, Oil Painting, Spray Paint
    By Scott Naismith

"My recent work now becomes more involved with cloud cover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds are visible masses of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. They have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour. I am constantly referring to the paradox of a cloud’s perceived weight and its fragility and the relationship between the cool and warm colours created by it. I have become increasingly interested in catching the moment when heavy overcast clears to reveal clear blue sky, a cool colour that complements the warmth it brings. While the most obvious manifestation of light refraction at this time would occur in the form of a rainbow, I will be concerned with accentuating the infinite, more subtle effects. I find myself inspired increasingly by the works of Turner, who created ephemeral atmospheric effects using large washes of liquid paint. Other influences include Henry Matisse, Francis Cadell...
