Sir John Arnesby Brown
Victorian Nottingham City Landscape 1887 - British 19th century art oil painting

1887

About the Item

A superb British Victorian city landscape oil painting by noted Nottingham born artist John Arnesby Brown, painted in 1887. This rare early work is a product of Arnesby Brown's time studying in his home town at Nottingham School of Art in the late 1880s. Even at this date Brown revealed himself to be far ahead of many of his contemporaries in his approach to subject matter. Rather than a tightly painted topographical record of the city, he presents us with an already impressionistic and highly evocative view of an industrial city centre, together with the restless bustle of its street life. The work is rich with contemporary reference; the wall of advertisements in the background referring to a performance by one of the most lauded sopranos of the century, Adelina Patti, on a tour to Nottingham's recently opened theatre with Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado (one of the duo's most successful operettas). A really atmospheric twilight view of Nottingham's Victorian past by a noted Nottingham artist. Signed with monogram and dated lower left AB/87. Provenance. Scottish estate. James Bourlet labels verso. Condition. Oil on canvas, 36 inches by 24 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed a complementary frame, 43 inches by 31 inches framed and in good condition. Sir John Alfred Arnesby Brown RA (1866-1955) was an English landscape artist and one of the leading British landscape artists of the 20th century and best known for his impressionistic depictions of pastoral landscapes, often featuring cattle. Arnesby Brown first studied at the Nottingham School of Art in the late 1880s, before entering the studio of Andrew McCallum where he first started to paint outdoors. This was followed by a move to London where he became a pupil of Hubert von Herkomer, and was influenced by Barbizon and Impressionist landscape painters. He later studied at the Bushey School of Art in Hertfordshire for four years from 1889. Brown spent much of his life at St Ives, Cornwall, between 1890 and 1910, where he came to paint 'en plein air' with artists such as Stanhope Forbes and Adrian Stokes. He was highly respected in Cornwall and was elected President of St Ives Society of Artists. Sir John Arnesby Brown ranks alongside the top British Impressionists. Three of his paintings were purchased for the nation by the Chantrey Bequest, at a time when it was considered as an 'unprecedented compliment' for an artist to have two works thus selected. After exhibiting at the Royal Academy for the first time in 1890, he became an elected Associate there in 1903. In 1896 he married Mia Edwards (1870–1931), a painter who studied at Bushey under Sir Hubert von Herkomer. They lived in Norfolk and St Ives, Cornwall. Arnesby Brown was knighted in 1938. He died in 1955, having not painted since 1942 due to blindness. He is buried in the cemetery of the Parish Church of St Mary in his hometown of Haddiscoe, Norfolk. His brother Eric Brown (1877–1939) was the first director of the National Gallery of Canada, from 1912 till 1939.

  • Breton Courtship - British 19thC exhib art portrait landscape oil painting

A stunning 1891 exhibited oil painting by British listed artist George Sherwood Hunter. This is a glorious British Impressionist painting from his travels in Northern France. It depicts “A Breton Courtship” in blue hot summer tones and is married well with the French Barbizon frame. The couple sit opposite each other, on either side of the road they are travelling together. A fantastic painting. This is a large oil on canvas by the Scottish artist who is one of my favourite artists of the period. George Sherwood Hunter was a well travelled artist and he painted throughout Europe. He is represented in many public collections. Provenance. Exhibited: Royal Society of British Artists 1891. Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition.
