Ted Harrison
Japan - colourful, graphic, modern, minimalist, landscape, acrylic on canvas

1988

About the Item

He loved to paint people and places. Ted Harrison became one of Canada’s most popular artists known for his brightly coloured paintings that depicted the world around him. This modern landscape of a mountain, a classic Japanese pagoda, a gate, a lake, two figures in traditional dress, and two birds is rendered in vivid blues, pinks, orange, purple, yellow, white and a touch of black. It’s a charming, joyful piece. "Life is a rainbow road, multicoloured with the most brilliant hues and contrasting with the darkest tones.” Ted Harrison Harrison was born (1925-2015) in a small English village. He obtained a Diploma in Design from the Hartlepool College of Art in 1950. He and his family emigrated to the Yukon in the 1960’s where he painted, wrote children’s books and began a life-long career teaching. The land and the people of the Yukon became his ‘Shangri-la’. In 1987 he was awarded an Order of Canada for his contribution to Canadian culture. In 1993 he moved to Victoria, BC to continue his painting and writing. He was inducted in the Royal Conservatory of the Arts in 2005. Harrison’s paintings are held in private and public collections throughout Canada, the U.S. ,New Zealand, Japan, and Germany.

  • American Family No. 3
    By Travis Walker
    Located in Denver, CO
For the last 10 years Travis Walker has made landscape paintings about Jackson Hole, a place that never ceases to inspire him to pick up his brushes. He works on location, capturing the essence of the seemingly mundane scenes around town: an old salon, a decaying house with a fence made of skis, a vintage trailer park. His work is influenced by the work of American regionalists Edward Hopper and Grant Wood, Japanese printmaking, and German Expressionism. Travis Walker is the founder and director of Teton Artlab, a nonprofit arts organization that provides studio space for artists. He was born in 1976 in Tokyo, Japan, and earned his BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2000 from Virginia Commonwealth University. Recent group exhibitions include the 2012 Western Visions Show and Sale and the 2013 and 2012 Takin' It to the Streets Art Fair, among many others. Solo exhibitions include "American Dreams" in 2012 at Cowboy Coffee...
