Todd Murphy is an American artist whose large-scale paintings, digital prints, and sculptures explore images of flora, fauna, and bodily forms. Murphy's practice encompasses American history, slavery, architecture, and contemporary art.
Todd Murphy’s artistic practice integrates photography, painting, and sculpture to convey ideas of fantasy and transformation. With the curiosity of a 19th-century naturalist, Murphy creates meticulous photographic studies featuring dresses and animals, especially horses, birds, and stags, which become the inspiration for intricate stories based in the fantastic and supernatural. With connotations to fantasy literature and Southern history, the works use these animals as tools for dialogue on the fabric of life, as in his fantastic work Scarlett Branch Stag (2017). Photography is the basis for Murphy’s work which can be seen in his paintings; photographs are also used as studies for his sculptures. His work is in the collections of the High Museum of Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Mint Museum.
