About the Item
Topher Straus' "Safe" transcends the realm of landscape art, becoming a powerful narrative woven through meticulous brushstrokes. This limited edition piece captures a poignant moment of peace amidst the harrowing reality of war.
The story begins on October 6th, 2023, in Straus' home studio. Commissioned to create a painting of Jerusalem for an international conference in Denver, he embarked on a last minute journey to Israel seeking inspiration. However, mere hours after landing in Tel Aviv on October 7th, while on the beach experiencing the Mediterranean sea, the sirens wailed, shattering the city's tranquility. Missiles streaked across the sky, marking the start of the Israel-Hamas War.
Trapped in the chaos, Straus spent a grueling three days at the airport, desperately seeking a flight out. Seeking solace from the airport's madness, he ventured into one of the few remaining open cafes. There, a kind stranger, an Israeli woman, offered him a lifeline - a flight to Mulan, Italy.
As the plane took off, shrouded in darkness to avoid detection, the passengers held their breath. The pilot's voice crackled through the intercom on descent, announcing, "We're safe." Peering through the window, Straus witnessed the sight that would become this masterpiece - the sun-drenched fields of Mulan, a stark contrast to the turmoil he'd just experienced.
"Safe" is more than a depiction of a landscape; it's a testament to the unexpected kindness of strangers, the enduring hope for peace, and the profound relief of escaping danger. Each layer of Straus' digital artistry, meticulously applied, evokes a sense of quiet contemplation and a reminder of the fragility of peace.
Owning a Topher Straus "Safe" is more than acquiring a decoration; it's a conversation starter, a window into a powerful narrative, and a reminder of humanity's strength in the face of adversity.

The Process
Straus' creative journey begins with a reference image, often taken himself from a time he connected deeply with his surroundings. Once in his studio, he pares it down to the most basic of lines and shapes, then using a “digital brush”, he meticulously layers countless strokes - hundreds, even thousands - to build his vision, obsessing over every detail. Every vibrant hue, every subtle reflection, becomes a testament to his obsessive pursuit of an abstract yet deeply personal reality.
When his digital masterpiece has reached completion, he entrusts it to skilled artisans. They utilize a cutting-edge sublimation process, which unlike traditional printing, no dots of color mar the surface; there’s only the flawless, vibrant artwork molecularly bonded with a sheet of aluminum. A protective resin shields the art and adds luminosity, then the sheet is seamlessly bonded to a brushed black aluminum frame, ensuring both strength and sleek modernity. This meticulous process imbues the final piece with an almost backlit quality, amplifying the vivid colors and igniting the viewer's gaze.
Each finished artwork bears an individualized plaque of authenticity discreetly placed on its back. This elegant inscription details the title, size, edition number, and copyright notice, ensuring the work’s originality.
