Antique Oil Painting of Washington’s Headquarters, Valley Forge, Pa ca 1890’s

ca 1890’s

About the Item

This unsigned late 19th century painting portrays the property used by George Washington as his headquarters during the American Revolution. Known as the Isaac Potts House, it was built in Upper Merion Township, Pennsylvania about ten years before Washington decided to use it during the winter of 1777-78. Now part of and within the Valley Forge National Historic Park, the house has become an icon symbol of George Washington and his thousands of troops forming the Continental Army. This charming oil on canvas was painted ca. 1890-98. It appears to have been done on site and is also painted in winter, just as Washington would have seen it. What is interesting is the surrounding landscape and its relatively new plantings, suggesting that the land had been cleared in recent times to this painting. There is a flagpole shown just to the left of the house and a small cannon shown close by as well. Unfortunately the painting is not signed but it is clear the artists was talented and knew their way around the paintbrush and paintbox. The attention put to details in the house and landscape is quite fine. The oil on canvas measures 16” x20” and comes with its original late 19th century gold decorative frame. There is one old repair patch visible from the backside. It must have been professionally repaired as there is no visibility of that repair to the front. The overall framed dimensions are 20” x 24”. Other than the repair noted, the work is in very good condition for its 130 year age. The frame, too, is in good condition with little or no need of repair in any way. All in all, this is a wonderful example of Americana from the very late 19th century and ready to hang on the wall of your choice. It presents a very crisp and clean image, given the snowy background contrasting with the house and landscape features
