Lokre. 20ème siècle Toulon, Le Port, La Vieille Darse, Mai 1939 Oil on Canvas. Signed lower left. Image size 25.4 inches x 19.5 inches ( 64.5cm x 49.5cm ). Frame size 26.8 inches x 20.5 inches ( 68cm x 53cm ). Available for sale; this original oil painting is by the French artist “Lokre” and is dated May 1939. The painting is presented and supplied in a sympathetic contemporary frame (which is shown in these photographs) and is float mounted showing the canvas in its entirety. The canvas and the painted surface have benefitted from cleaning, restoration and conservation, which was performed on our instruction, supervision and approval. This vintage painting is now in very good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower left. This is a stunning original oil on canvas painting of the Mediterranean Port of La Vielle Darse in Toulon. This is one of the most beautiful harbours in Europe and a modern-day tourist destination. This painting shows a long view towards the quay and harbour, which is a much sought after subject matter. We see the parade of old buildings on the quayside, painted in different colours, with sunshades over the pavement areas. There are people going about their business, and small sailing vessels tethered to the quay. Above is a clear blue sky and the colours of the buildings and boats are reflected in the calm waters of the port, shimmering golds, blues, and yellows, creating a wonderful effect. This image really captures the warmth and charm of the ancient French port over eighty years ago. The painting is signed “Lokre” by the artist in the lower left section, but no more is known about the artist, other than he was evidently highly skilled and had a confident and joyous style. Given the events that followed four months later, he may well have been a young artist whose potential was never realised. The painting is dated on the reverse, “Mai 1939” (May 1939). This is hugely significant as the image captures the essence of this magnificent port immediately before the Second World War impacted its appearance for ever. These are the last days of carefree freedom that the town of Toulon would see for five years. This port, with its large naval base, suffered badly in the Second World War. Toulon was liberated by French troops in August 1944. Toulon is the capital of the Var region in south-eastern France. It is France’s principle naval base and has an arsenal, drydocks and shipbuilding yards. This image shows the Darse Vielle, in the west, which is the most sheltered part with well-protected anchorage. Behind it, the Faron Mountains form an imposing backdrop to the town. Today this area has been extensively renovated and is a major tourist attraction, and a base from which to explore the Provence region. Nowadays the port offers berths to visiting yachts.

Henry Robinson Hall was a Victorian and Edwardian artist who was particularly noted for his works on Highland cattle. He painted in both oils and watercolors. He was born in York to Eliza Robinson in 1859 and registered as Henry Robinson. His mother subsequently married John Storey Hall in 1867, and so his surname was changed accordingly. Hall lived for a while in Newcastle upon Tyne where he became involved in the artistic community. He later moved to Fylde in Lancashire and married. He later lived in Barrow in Furness and then Coniston in Cumbria, where he had a studio and also ran an artists’ supplies shop and café. He died in Coniston on 31st May 1927 and is buried in the churchyard of St. Andrews church there. Hall exhibited his works from 1895-1903 at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy. Today his works are held in the National Collection, the Atkinson Art Gallery, the Oldham Gallery, the Rossendale Museum and the Lakeland Arts Trust. He was a fellow of the North British Academy of Arts. © Big Sky Fine Art This original oil on canvas painting by Henry Robinson Hall depicts a herd of Highland Cattle ascending the slopes of Glen Menteith, in Scotland. The Glen of Menteith leads to the Lake of Menteith, also known as Loch Inchmahome, located on the Carse of Stirling. In the background we see the majestic mountain range, illuminated by the sky in shades of pink and purple, the colors bouncing back from the clouds. In the mid-ground there are smaller, rounded hills with trees, and a stone bridge spanning a gushing stream. We focus on the foreground, where there is gorse, heather and ferns abundant in lush green grass and half a dozen cattle walking along a rough path towards the viewer. The cattle have shaggy coats...
