About the Item
This fine impressionist oil landscape of a winter mill was painted by German American artist Walter Koeniger (1881-1943). Koeniger was born in Germany, the son of an architect, and turned to painting after studying under Ducker and Gebhardt, and, after studying in St. Petersburg, eventually moved to the Catskill Mountains in New York, where he spent thirty years near Woodstock and Saugerties sketching and painting frozen water scenes and snow-covered landscapes. He became known as “The Painter of Snow”. Oil on panel, signed lower left, and housed in a decorative carved giltwood frame. Dimensions: 28.5 in H x 39.25 in W, actual; 39.75 in H x 50.5 in W, framed.
