A painting by Maurice Askenazy. "Interior" is one of Maurice Askenazy’s more modern compositions, calling to mind the work of Bonnard or Vuillard. The intimate scene shows a nude female model, dramatically seen in profile, posing for a painter in a sun-drenched studio. The door to the room is open, giving the impression that the viewer is stealing a glimpse of a private interaction between artist and model. Painter and teacher, Thomas Fogarty, Jr., taught at the Art Students League in Manhattan for many years and exhibited his oil and pastel landscapes and still lifes at the Whitney Museum of American Art and many New York galleries. Fogarty began his teaching career at the Pratt Institute and Rutgers University, before joining the faculty at the Art Students League, where he taught painting, composition and life drawing. Fogarty was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. Both the artist and his father, Thomas Fogarty, Sr., were beloved teachers at the Art Students League and influenced generations of American painters, including Norman Rockwell.
