Paul Desmond Brown (American, 1893-1958) was an artist, illustrator, and chronicler of sporting life in the first half of the 20th century. He was well known for his drawings of horses, dogs, and their human companions. His drawings and sketches of animals, especially horses, at work and play, were published in sporting magazines, Brooks Brothers catalogs, and numerous books for children and adults. His career spanned more than fifty years.

Paul Brown was an American illustrator of equestrian subjects although he was never formally trained as an artist. He is primarily known for his paintings, drawings and sketches of horses and equestrian sports. He is also well-known for his over three decades of illustrations for Brooks Brothers catalogs including more than one-thousand drawings. These illustrations made him a major influence on the image of urban males in twentieth-century America. With Paul Brown's art, color is only an occasional adjunct playing a very secondary role to the use of the hard-edged line. His style has a calculated simplicity, a casual appearance, but is very carefully contrived and executed with much authority. Illustrations by Paul Brown drew heavily upon copious notes and studies, often aided by photography as well as photographic memory. Brown preferred to draw with a pencil and, although not fond of painting, successfully employed a technique of using tinted paper with white highlights. During the heyday of polo in the 1930's, Paul Brown immortalized the sport for many in his illustrations for Peter Vischer's POLO magazine, of which Brown was a member of the editorial board. "Today those historical moments are often taken for granted, as is much of the past, but we still have Paul Brown's unique legacy to breathe life into those special times." Illustrating and writing books became Brown's main occupation, and he worked with the major publishers of the day including The Derrydale Press, Charles Scribner's Sons, Dodd, Mead & Company.

Born in Columbia, Missouri, Murry studied at the Detroit Academy of Art and worked as an artist for the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press. Murry traveled to the Bahamas, where he was inspired to paint modernist scenes of island life and people. By the early 1930s, Murry had relocated to Los Angeles, where he caught the attention of Synchromist painter Stanton Macdonald Wright, State Supervisor for the Federal Art Project (FAP) in Southern California. MacDonald Wright enrolled Murry into the FAP. Murry’s Gauguin-influenced painting Sun Image was exhibited together with other FAP artists at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1936, and Murry was also included in the FAP exhibit at the Paris Exposition in 1937. Stendahl Galleries in Los Angeles, the Chamber of Commerce Gallery in Santa Barbara, and at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art also showed Murry’s work during the 1930s. Murry created a murals for Los Angeles Water & Power Company, the Boise, Idaho Post Office, and Glendale Junior College. In 1939, Murry's work was exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exposition and the New York World's Fair. He also was included in the All California Exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of art that same year.
