Antonio Díaz Cortés
"Brazilian Girl, " Oil on Canvas Portrait signed by Antonio Diaz Cortes

1969

About the Item

Antonio Diaz Cortes, a Mexican artist influenced by Pablo Picasso and Rufino Tamayo, employs the Cubist idiom to create a portrait with elements of pattern in Brazilian Girl of 1969. Unlike analytical Cubism, with its reduced palette, Cortes uses planes of color to represent the woman and the picture's background. Shades of blue, white, brown, and black make up the surface of the canvas, demarcating the girl's neck, face, and costume. The colored planes--primarily blue and white--are shaded arbitrarily to create a shallow, shimmering depth that surrounds the figure, thus creating an allover pattern that competes with the representation of the figure. The pattern collapses figure and ground; as in Matisse, and the work becomes a decorative surface. 30" x 24" art 31 1/2" x 25 1/2" framed Antonio Diaz Cortes was an artist from a young age. He studied at the Potosino Institute of Fine Arts and has been described as an "Oriental Mystic Artist" by Artes de Mexico. He says, "The Subject that interests me is LIGHT. Regarding the form of the nude and geometrism, independent or mixed, sometimes with a certain erotic charge." He is influenced by both Pablo Picasso and Rufino Tamayo. "I always seek to cause amazement, first to myself, then to my colleagues who know the difficulties of achieving it and then to the common spectator, who does not know about the technical difficulties and the visual experience required to express an observation of nature combined with feeling."
