About the Item
This is a very stylized and powerful portrait by the noted artist Frank Anderson Trapp. It is dated 1940, and is very much in the modern style of French painters Ferdinand Leger and Le Corbusier.
Frank A. Trapp was born in Pittsburg in 1922. As a young man he was a gifted student. He was educated at Carnegie Mellon with a B.A. and was a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard earning a M. A. and Ph.d. He served as a US Army officer, in New Guinea in 1945. Trapp went on to have a very successful artistic, teaching and museum career, first at Williams College, then at Amherst’s Mead Art Museum from 1956-1992. At that museum he mounted a successful retrospective exhibit of the New York Armory Show of 1913, including the return of Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase and a visit by Duchamp, himself. Afterwards he became friends with Duchamp as well as with Edward Hopper. Trapp’s knowledge of the international art world was legendary within his circle. Trapp died in 2005 and was buried in Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Pittsburg.
The portrait was likely done during his early years as a student at Carnegie Mellon. It draws heavily on the concepts of stylized shadow and abstracted forms, with a hint of cubism. One can see that even in his formative years as an artist, early twentieth century artistic concepts captivated him. The colors and forms are bright and crisp, as one might expect with a modern portrait. It is signed lower left and dated 1940. The canvas measures 20” x 25” and has been professionally cleaned and restored, with a small patch visible from the back. It is framed with an interesting wood frame that relates well to the work without overpowering or competing with it. The overall framed measurements are 24 1/2” x 29 1/2”. Both painting and frame are in very good condition and ready to hang on the wall of your choice.
