About the Item

Mid Century portrait of a grey haired woman wearing a sun hat by Jon Blanchette (American, 1908-1987). Rendered his signature style, this portrait is clean and vibrant. The subject is looking off to the viewer's right, in a classic three-quarter pose. The burnt umber underpainting is visible in a few areas, adding a sense of depth to the piece. Signed "Jon Blanchette" in the lower left. Presented in a giltwood frame. Board size: 20"H x 16"W. Jon Blanchette (American, 1908-1987). Blanchette was born in Somerset, England on March 29, 1908; he immigrated to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1918. Artistically inclined at age six, he later studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute where he received his B.A. In 1932, he moved to Los Angeles where he painted, did architectural design, interior decorating, and stage sets for Fox Studios. In 1948, he settled in Aptos, California where he painted fine art and taught privately. During the summers of 1965-75 he held workshops in Mendocino. A romantic realist, he was primarily an oil painter but was also proficient with pen & ink, watercolor, and silk screen. Blanchette died in Aptos on July 3, 1987. He attended the Pratt Institute and the Adelphi College Art School, and served in the U.S. Army during WWW1. After the war, he married and traveled to Europe. He returned to New York in the mid 1920's, and with a group of contemporaries formed The Fifteen Gallery in Manhattan.
