Alfred Edouard Tourillon was born on September 9, 1871 in Livry in Seine et Oise, (Today Livry-Gargan in Seine-Saint Denis). He was born into a world, where painting has been going through unprecedented upheavals for two decades. The Academies of Fine Arts are called into question, the traditional approach to subjects and genres is shaken up and recently, painters have been indulging in a revolutionary concept of light and color. New techniques and outdoor plein-air painting lead to a new style of painting. Tourillon was attracted early in his life to the fine art of painting. At a very young age, he rubbed shoulders with artists living in the Nouvelle Athènes district in Paris and was eventually apprenticed by Denis-Pierre Begeret (1846 - 1910), who recognized Tourillon’s extraordinary talent for detailed composition in still lifes and landscapes. Based in Lagny, Alfred Edouard Tourillon went on to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes in 1896, 1898, 1899, 1900 and 1901 and received plenty of recognition for his talent from collectors, as well as from his peers. In 1899, he received an honorable mention by "Le Salon des Artistes Français" in Paris for "Les Artichokes". This painting was later acquired by Baron Alphonse de Rothschild and is held today at the Museum of the city of Draguignan. Tourillon would frequent the neo-impressionists of the Lagny group, meeting artists such as Maximilien Luce, Camille Pissaro, Henri Cortes Émile Gustave Cavallo-Peduzzi, being especially friendly with Léo Gausson and André Cortes. However, sticking to his naturalistic style, Alfred Edouard never gave in to this group’s avant-garde style, but he did participate in all the exhibitions from 1899 to 1904 of the Artistic and Literary Union of the canton of Lagny and he also sat on the organizing committee. After the eventual dissolvement of the Lagny artist group, Alfred Edouard Tourillon settled in Gagny and refocused on natural subject matters such as animal subjects or rural scenes, whilst favoring paintings around hunting which were then in vogue. At the same time he continued painting his accomplished still lifes, which reveal an artist who perfectly masters the pictorial technique of this style. His compositions and execution perfectly meet what is academically expected of this genre. During his career, Alfred-Edouard Tourillon produced many still lifes composed of various objects, such as fruit, vegetables, flowers and of course his famous masterly depictions of shells, crustaceans and fish. Alfred Edouard Tourillon had created a large body of over 250 paintings, when he died on February 9, 1942 at the age of 71 and was buried in his home town Livry-Gargan in France. The painting here on offer is a fine example of the subject matter Tourillon so excelled in. The painting itself dates to about 1900 and in the 1950/60’s, having survived two wars, it was picked up by an unknown restorer and who possibly relined it, i. e. professionally attached the painted canvas to a new, blanc canvas on stretcher. This could have also been done decades earlier, as many artists would paint onto loose canvas, which once dried can be stored until a sale was made a lot easier. Once sold, the painted canvas square would then be mounted on to the blank canvas of a fitting stretcher and suitably framed. Whatever the history – Either version is of equal non-consequence for the painting, which is in fine, clean and absolutely stable condition. However, I am certain that the painting was (re-)framed in the mid-20th century taste, with ”that” so time-typical calico lined inner frame which dates the frame to the 1950/60’s. Later at some point, the outer frame must have suffered from exposure to moisture, which caused sections of its gilded gesso surface to detach. This has been cleverly addressed by the previous owner, by converting the finish of the outer frame into a shabby chic look, with traces of the old gilding still showing between rich reddish-brown speckled finish, thus saving the historical framing. The so framed painting presents rather well, bears the original brass presentation plaque engraved with the name of the artist and is ready to be hung as it is. By Hedwig Mechle-Grossmann

Hedwig Mechle - Grossmann (Germann, * 3rd of December 1857, Görlitz - † 1st of October, 1928 Ödenburg) Die Kleine Rosenverkäuferin - The Little Rose Seller • Oil on carse canvas, ca. 100 x 75 cm • Frame, 107 x 81 cm • Signed and dated 1920 upper right This large painting will make everybody stop, look, smile and want to buy a lovely rose from that charming girl. Take your time and have a look at the details … the stopper of the water ceramic bottle, her piece of bread, the torn and frayed clothing and more. Hedwig Mechle-Grossmann is well known and appreciated for her expressive genre scenes depicting children. Born in Görlitz, she worked in Berlin and moved on to Ödenburg, where she died. Important examples of her work are held in the Ödenburg Landesmuseum. A few words on condition: The painting has received slight sympathetic restoration - The partially frayed edges have been professionally relined with a narrow strip of new canvas for strength and then the canvas has been re-stretched on to the original stretcher, with the arms of the stretcher covering most of the newly attached strips of canvas. One of the arms of the stretcher has suffered slight worm damage in the past. That short section has been treated, stabilized and the restorer covered the unsightly area with a strip of the same canvas, which was used to reline the edges. The frame seems to be original (certainly early 20thC) - the corners have been re-glued, small areas have been retouched and minor sections of the molding are missing. New small woodblocks...
