Carle John Blenner
Peonies & Delphinium

About the Item

A beautiful still life of peonies and delphinium flowers in a blue vase by American artist Carle John Blenner (1862-1952). Blenner was born in Richmond, Virginia, educated at Marburg, Germany, and graduated from the Yale University Art School. He studied for six years at the Academie Julien in Paris, under Bouguereau, Robert-Fleury, and Aman-Jean. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1887, at age 23, and for the next three years. His first exhibitions in the United States were in New York, and these commenced around 1889. From the 1890s, he maintained a working studio on 57th Street in New York City for more than 50 years. He is known not only for his portrait work, but also for his expert depiction of flowers. Blenner's flowers are true to life (and science) and seem to command the presence of real flowers. Blenner was an active member in several art clubs throughout America, including, The Alliance for American Artists, Salmagundi Club (1890), Newport Art Association, Washington Art Club, The Academy of Fine Arts, and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club which awards a "Carle J. Blenner" award to contemporary artists. He also taught at the Fine Arts departments at Columbia University, New York and at Yale University, New Haven. Oil on canvas, signed upper left, with several Christie’s auction labels on verso, and housed in a carved giltwood frame. Dimensions: 31 in H x 26 in W, actual; 35.5 in H x 30.5 in W x 2 in D, framed. Ref: 8
