Charles Kvapil
Flowers in the Window

1937

About the Item

'Flowers in the Window', oil on canvas, by Charles Kvapil (1937). What is not to love about bouquets of flowers in one's home? They bring the outdoors inside and with them, thoughts of nature, of spring, of hope and beauty. Placed in seductive vases, flowers may inspire one to action and to the realisation of how beautiful life can be. In a new museum-quality frame, the painting is in good overall condition having recently undergone a thorough cleaning by an art restoration professional. Signed by the artist in the lower left hand with the year of creation, 1937. Please enjoy the many photos which accompany this listing. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: Charles Kvapil was born in 1884 in Antwerp, Belgium, of Czech origin. He exhibited his first works there in 1908 at the Salon d'Anvers. After the war he attended l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp and began to exhibit in Paris in 1920 at the Salon des Indépendants. Kvapil was known primarily as a painter of people, in particular of curvaceous nudes. He moved into a studio in Montmartre where he painted his models in the studio with Sacre Coeur as backdrop. He also painted in the countryside like the Impressionists. Kvapil's paintings are creative and modern; his nudes and bouquets of flowers are energetic and powerful. His palette is rich in cobalt blues and in fiery earth tones. His technique is intuitive and confident. Although his oils were often modestly presented on panels of wood or soft board, those formats did not detract from the evident talent he displayed nor from the joy exemplified in his paintings. His paintings are vigorously sought after when they become available at the international auction houses. He is now represented in many public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, in the museums of Le Havre, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Amsterdam and Tunis. He exhibited in his lifetime in Paris, Munich, Brussels, Geneva, Rome, in Stockholm, London and New York. In his inimitable style, artist Stoëbel's abstract still life with black background is a lively and colourful modernist work. This artwork has a powerful intensity of tone and colour which speaks to Stoëbel's very distinctive style but remains completely approachable and appealing. This is part of the post-war concrete abstract movement, or Constructive Art...

  • Venus Cast - Figurative Painting Colors Black Purple White Yellow Grey
    By Lyubena Fox
    Located in Sofia, BG
"Venus cast" Oil on canvas (The painting is unframed 70 x 50 cm.) The Painting’s Qualities Lyubena Fox’s paintings are painted in several layers, using both the transparent and opaque qualities of oil paint. Each layer is applied after the previous has dried which makes the painting withstand time. It also creates a glowing, three-dimensional effect, which is due to the different layers showing though each other. These paintings are painted following the logic of how the eye perceives: seeing the details in the context of the form. To create a fulfilling experience, the images are composed of places, full of detail for the eye to explore and places where the eye can rest. “The impressions of Lyubena's paintings on the viewer is so mighty, mesmerizing, grand, that it paralyzes the imagination with its realistic perfection. Her paintings bring emotion of drama, mystery, love, desire and energy, represented by the vast creative power of her talent.” Bio Lyubena Fox was born in 1994 in Sofia, Bulgaria. 2013 she graduated from the National school of fine arts Bulgaria, specializing in illustration. The same year she moved to Florence, Italy to study painting with John M. Angel and in 2016 graduated from Angel Academy of Art Florence, after which she studied with Alessandro Dari. 2017 she has two solo exhibitions in Sofia. 2018 Lyubena has three of her paintings qualified as ARC finalists and later in May studies painting with her favorite contemporary painter Roberto Ferri...
