About the Item
Unframed.
This is a combination of painting and photography, the antique cyanotype process. The silhouette of the plant was first drawn, then painted not with ink or paint, but with light-sensitive photo emulsion. The blue and white pattern seen in each leaf is a sun print or lensless photograph of tiny plants laid on top of the painted area.
The multiple-day process depends on being able to see while painting in a dark room so as to not expose the light-sensitive painted silhouette before it’s time. The artist named this ongoing series of botanical paintings which have a fine blue and white pattern “Delft Garden” after the Dutch painted porcelain.
The agapanthus flowers from South Africa have highly structured heads like wheels (umbels) as do the tiny flowers seen up close in the pattern created across the painted silhouette. These miniature echoes of the bigger flower's shape are tops of the wild "cow parsley".
On 100% cotton watercolor paper. Signed on the back.

Christine So is an American printmaker, photographer and painter living in the hills across the bay from her hometown, San Francisco. She is best known for her blue and white cyanotype photographs of forests shrouded in fog. The Foggy Woods series is ever-growing as the artist continually hikes these hills which are often foggy at dawn. She explores radically different ways to use this antique photographic medium with and without out a camera. At times her blue prints look like screen prints. At others like abstract watercolors. Besides printing photographs from negatives, botanicals using entire branches, altering the chemical recipe to obtain novel colors, and creating abstract cyanotypes of deliberate patterns, she also paints images using the light-sensitive solution and prints a pattern within them. These last works she calls “cyanotype paintings”. The multiple-day process depends on being able to see while painting in a dark room so as to not expose the light-sensitive painted silhouette before it’s time. She named her series of botanical paintings which have a fine blue and white pattern “Delft Garden” after the Dutch painted porcelain. - The Pond II (hand-printed botanical cyanotype, 24 x 18 inches)Located in Oakland, CAUnframed. Although this looks like an etching or block print, it is a cyanotype, a type of 19th century cameraless photography also known as blueprints or sun prints. No ink or paint was involved and no photo negative either. This monotype was made by carefully arranging hundreds of individual blades of fresh-cut native Californian wild grass. The species of tall marsh grass is called Gray Rush or the latin name juncus patens. It is native to Northern California and grows in local wetlands. If not cut back, it it would grow over 4 feet tall. Every one of Christine So...Category

- Blue Maple IV ( 30 x 22 inch hand-printed botanical cyanotype)Located in Oakland, CAThese are two unframed botanical monotypes. This species of tree is a Dancing Peacock Full Moon Japanese Maple or in Latin, acer japonicum aconitifolium. The actual Japanese name is Mai Kujaku. Cyanotypes are a kind of 19th century alternative (cameraless) photographic process. While traditional cyanotypes are a navy blue background with sharp white silhouettes, this is a double exposure cyanotype. The two different shades of blue are created by exposing some parts of the light-sensitive paper to sunlight longer than others. The monochromatic multi-tone effect is rather like aquatint etchings. The cyanotype (a.k.a. sun-print) process is one of the oldest in the history of photography, dating back to the 1840's. Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun. Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative...Category
