Hal Alexander Courtney Morrison
Rare Antique Floral Oil Painting by Southern artist Hal Morrison (1852-1927)

ca 1890’s

About the Item

Hal Alexander Courtney Morrison was born in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island in 1852. Part of British North America at the time, PEI was quite rural and in order to pursue his interest in medicine, he went to Boston and graduated from Harvard Medical School. After a few years as a physician, Morrison decided to leave it all for his desire to be an artist. He left for a seven year tour of Europe to travel and study. Upon returning to the US, he needed to move to Bainbridge, Georgia for health reasons. Soon thereafter he settled in Atlanta and opened a studio. Morrison became known for his still lifes - flowers, fruits, fish and game. An avid sportsman, he put to canvas his passion for the outdoors, gaining national prominence. He spent time traveling through the Southeast, at times returning to Canada during summer months. He died in Atlanta in 1927. This rare painting is a realistic still life, mainly of roses. Much like Martin Johnson Heade, famous American still life artist from Pennsylvania a generation before, Morrison painted realistic scenes that appear almost real for the touch and smell. Morrison set his flowers and buds against a black background for great contrasting affect. The light on the blooms and their leaves is quite convincing. Oil on board, the painting measures 20” x 14” and was recently cleaned, restored in a few small areas and varnished with a high sheen to enhance the realism. It is signed lower left and dates to the 1890’s. It has been placed in a pinkish oak frame from the same general period. The frame picks up the pink hues used in the roses and compliments the piece without overpowering it. The incised reeding within the frame adds additional depth and detailing. Overall framed dimensions are 25 1/2” x 19 1/2”. The painting and frame are in very good condition and ready to hang on the wall of your choice.

Oil painting on canvas by female Korean artist based in New York. Hyper-realistic, Trompe-l’œil painting that depicts an assortment of glass vessels. The glasses seem to pop off the canvas through optical illusion that renders the image in three-dimensions. Sensational paintings of glass vessels come to life in this dynamic exhibition featuring new works by Korean artist Inkyeong Baek. Demonstrating an uncanny ability to capture her subject-matter, Baek’s enchanting oil paintings glitter with a gemstone-like quality that truly captivates. The material characteristics of glass are fickle, often visually elusive. Yet each work on display beautifully illustrates, in stunning, hyper-realistic detail, an array of objects, from champagne flutes to whisky tumblers. Take the large-scale painting, Rocks...
