Marilyn Simandle
"Pansies" Watercolor Still Life

2000s

About the Item

Vibrant floral still life by Marilyn Simandle (American, b.1946). Splashes of color and white petals pop out against a dark background and glossy black pitcher. Despite being a still life, there is a dynamism in the stems and leaves of the flowers, almost like confetti. Signed "M. Simandle" lower right. Label on verso with title "Pansies", size, and artist's full name. Displayed in a wood frame with 8 ply mat. Image size: 16"H x 11"W Marilyn Simandle had always known that she would become an artist. Learning from her mother, a musician and painter in her own right, Simandle started painting watercolors at age six. Raised in the San Francisco Bay area, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from San Jose State University. Simandle went on to share her developed knowledge and incredible talent by teaching art and conducting workshops throughout California and at the Scottsdale Artists' School for the past 15 years. Originally a watercolorist, Marilyn has committed herself in a new direction in recent years, oil painting. Her paintings assimilate the delicate touch and planning needed in watercolor with the boldness and finish that only oil painting can achieve. In her paintings, Simandle tries to convey her own personal philosophy of art. She loves to explore the complex interplay of light and its effects on architecture and surroundings. An avid traveler and photographer, Marilyn uses her photographs simply as the starting point, an inspiration for her composition, she paints what she wants the subject matter to be, engaging collectors with uplifting paintings filled with harmonious color, depth and vitality. While striving for truth in her paintings, she does believe that "perfection is the enemy of great art." A single brush stroke can speak volumes in a painting. Simandle is inspired and influenced by the poetry in the brush strokes of John Singer Sargent and Joaquin Sorolla. Residing in the Santa Ynez Valley with her husband, Ted Goerschner, also an artist, where she explores all her passions: painting, gardening, playing bridge, and horseback riding. A music lover, Marilyn has a baby grand piano that she enjoys playing while taking breaks from painting. She and her husband travel often, bringing back magnificent subject matter for their paintings. Marilyn recently traveled through Italy, Greece and the former Yugoslavia. The Mediterranean light was inspiring, as was the romance of the architecture. Marilyn is a master Signature Member of Oil Painters of America (OPA), a Signature member of the American Watercolor Society, Plein-Air Painters of America (PAPA) and the California Art Club. She has numerous articles in magazines such as Southwest Art and Art of the West. In 1996, her first book on Watercolor painting was published by North Light and since, a second book is available entitled Contagious Enthusiasm. Marilyn has received many awards in nationally juried shows, among them: the prestigious "High Winds Medal" from the Watercolor Society in 1992 and 1993; in 1997 the Oil Painters of American (OPA) West Coast Regional "First Place"; "People Choice Award", OPA National Show, 1998; and the Shiryl Smithson OPA Memorial Award in 1999. To date, she has exhibited in over 80 one-woman shows throughout the United States. She has become internationally known and collected by both individuals and corporations worldwide. • My Roses with Peaches
    By Teresa Vito
    Located in Loveland, CO
My Roses with Peaches by Teresa Vito 20x16" oil Floral Still Life Bouquet of Roses surrounded by a table full of peaches Signed lower right ABOUT THE ARTIST: Teresa Vito's paintings reflect the beauty she sees all around her. She loves painting living energy, whether it is the outdoor landscape, berries and flowers picked for a still life, or the unending variety of the human face. Vito has been a full time oil painter since 1992. She currently lives in Pueblo, Colorado. Vito has won numerous national and regional awards including an Award of Excellence, Best Portrait and Best Still Life Awards from Oil Painters of America. She also received the Best of Show award from the Artists of Colorado Exhibition held at the Colorado History Museum. Teresa Vito grew up in a one store town in upstate New York. She had never met an artist or had gone to an art gallery until she went to college. She chose to major in art because she loved to draw. College offered no clue as to how to become an artist so she decided to try to figure it out on her own. With $250 and a train ticket to Denver (she had never been west of Ohio) carrying a suitcase, a purse and a portfolio of nude drawings, Vito began her artistic journey. During her twenties she did every job she could find that was art related. Vito worked in a frame shop and gallery, at art supply stores, made posters and newspaper advertisements and created display windows in downtown Denver. The year the Art Students League in Denver opened, she maneuvered a job there running a small art supply store. It was here she found out about the world of Artist's Workshops. Vito learned as much as she could looking through the door of the many classes taught by master artists, who were in fact making a living with their art. With this inspiration Vito saved up enough money in 1992 to live cheaply for a year and become a full time artist. She has never looked back and strives to continue to be the best possible painter she can be. She now teaches workshops with gratitude and generosity, to share in all that she has learned. Vito has a BA in Fine Art from the State University of New York at Geneseo and has taught and studied at the Art Students League at Denver and the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts. She has expanded her knowledge by taking numerous workshops over the years with artists Quang Ho, Ramon Kelley...
