Will Ayres
The Lost Still Life Dutch Masters inspired oil painting by Will Ayres

2020

About the Item

This spectacular still life painting by Will Ayres is truly exceptional - the artist's techniques are mind-blowing. Will's first solo show was a sellout in London, and his work has continued to excite and and enthrall serious collectors to this day. He work has appeared in group shows alongside Mario Testino, Andy Warhol and Andreas Gursky. Delighted to have this piece available on the 1stdibs platform exclusively for sale. His other still life painting we had on 1stDibs sold to a private collector this week directly through the artist, so only this one left. Still Life compositions are initially composed, photographed, rearranged and re photographed many times over. Will uses photography simply as a way of imaging memory. It is the actual act of making a painting that invention takes over. It acts primarily in relation to the basic composition for a painting, similar in a way that some painters in the latter part of the 19th Century used photography. The flowers live in an expansive visual space, like an arena for an event to be played out. The dark mysterious backgrounds and rich velvety shadows are influenced directly from the Dutch Still Life. Where as the simplicity in composition and central images derives from Manet's later flower paintings. The scale and process at play creates a contemporary visual appearance. Throughout his painting process, Will wants to end up with a painterly image that he hasn't planned. This method of choice, chance, inspiration and deconstruction may produce a specific type of image, but it never produces a predetermined one. What matters is the experience of the language of paint, scale and arrangement. The imperfections are manifested in the paintings visible brushwork and at times impasto application of paint. By not planning the outcome, he hopes to achieve the same coherence and fragility that a random slice of nature always possesses.

  • Jules Elie Peonies by Katharine Rowe floral painting of peonies
    By Katharine Rowe
    Located in London, GB
Katharine spent a long time mixing paint to reach the right level of smokiness and avoid any saccharine pink in these peonies. They seem to be quite solid but at the same time quite delicate, they are a joy to paint. Katharine Rowe is an English painter she graduated in Fine Art and History of Art at the University of Edinburgh in 1999 and spent a year studying at Université de la Sorbonne, Paris. Having spent a decade working in advertising Katharine felt the increasing need to be out of the office and with her paintbrush. The past 9 years have been dedicated to just that. Katharine is strongly motivated by colour and she often spends up to an hour mixing and preparing paints before turning to the canvas. Katharine is always inspired by her surroundings from the varied landscapes of London...

This was the flower artist Katherine Rowe had in her wedding bouquet and so they have always had a special place in my heart.
