About the Item
Portwood 21 The Balvenie 0182, limited edition photograph, signed and numbered
Ernie Button’s photographs are a treat to the imagination. A journey along the delicate lines and vibrant colors that constitute the artist’s imagery can transport the viewer's mind to a distant planet, or maybe a petri dish alive with microorganisms.
The level of abstraction in Button’s work is elemental — perhaps a scientist or a philosopher might study the origin and evolution of the universe through these beautiful and captivating images. One would never guess that this study could be founded or sparked by a film of spirits, left in the bottom of a glass. But the easily overlooked details stunningly captured by Button's photographs, remind us of the relevance we give to scale and how at the end the importance we place on dimensions might be irrelevant to a deep experience of life — the eye, the nebula, or a film of Whiskey — the history of our universe is written in everything that comprises our reality.
Ernie Button is an award-winning photographer based in Phoenix, Arizona, whose work has been exhibited in the United States, China, Scotland, and Europe. His photographs have been featured in National Geographic Magazine, The New York Times, Whisky Advocate, American Photo, Popular Photography, Esquire, Wired, Smithsonian, Whisky Quarterly, and Popular Mechanics, as well as on limited edition packaging for The Macallan.

- Planet Glenfiddich 125, limited edition color photograph, signed and numberedBy Ernie ButtonLocated in Sante Fe, NMPlanet Glenfiddich 125, limited edition color photograph, signed and numbered. Whisky is a time-honored drink, finely crafted and enjoyed for centuries. I feel fortunate that I found the Vanishing Spirits phenomenon. I am a fan of observing my world and the things that are happening around me; noticing the smaller details that may be ignored or overlooked. The idea for this project occurred while putting a used Scotch glass into the dishwasher. I noted a film on the bottom of a glass and when I inspected closer, I noted these fine, lacy lines filling the bottom. What I found through some experimentation is that these patterns and images that are seen can be created with the small amount of Single-Malt Scotch whisky left in a glass after most of it has been consumed. The alcohol dries and leaves the sediment in various patterns. It’s a little like snowflakes in that every time the Scotch dries, the glass yields slightly different patterns and results. Some of the images reference the celestial as if the image was taken of space; something that the Hubble telescope...Category
