Sunrise, Sunset, 2018, Curacao, digitally manipulated photograph, signed

2018

About the Item

Sunrise, Sunset, 2018 is part of the artist's "The Curacao Pictures" Series. This archival pigment print is printed on Epson Enhanced Matte paper. Image size is 18" x 13.5" on 20" x 15.5" paper size. Signed on the Verso. Edition of 6 + 1 AP The artist visits Curacao yearly and takes pictures of the landscape. Each image is manipulated on the I-phone screen by the artist's finger, in situ, akin to plein air painting. Though the resulting image is abstract. Forms and colors are pushed, pulled, fragmented, swirled and swiped using an array of applications. The final images compress space; back is front, outside is inside. Past, present and future coexist simultaneously, space is ambiguous. The works embody the duality of contemporary photographic techniques and the tradition of gestural painting. Mr. Cruz is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant. His first solo show was at White Columns, New York City in 2003. His last solo show “I’ll Take you There” was at the Olympia Project, Bushwick, in 2020. Framing is recommended before shipping. All work is shipped flat, not rolled.

  • The Kitchen Drawer - An overwhelming source of detritus... everyday objects
    Located in London, GB
The Kitchen Drawer Simply an overwhelming source of detritus... 'Detritus' series was born from the twin frustrations of lockdown halting all planned projects, yet litter still somehow being dropped in abundance on my street. With no idea of the final output, or indeed the hygiene implications, I started to collect, scan, and record what I found. When I realised these colourful misshapen objects could be turned into something beautiful, the frustrations left me and I began looking for other sources of Detritus. These collages gave me purpose during the pandemic and allowed me to grow something beautiful from a place of frustration. My aim is to simply give viewers of the work a fleeting moment of calm. Unable to shoot anything, I’ve been making collections of things I find on the ground and scanning them to create composite images of otherwise ignored or discarded objects." - George McLeod...
