Mitchell Funk
Art Deco Movie Theater Marquee - Color Field Painting Meet Photography, Abstract

1980

About the Item

A marquee for an Art Deco Movie theater in Denton, Texas is photographed with meticulous precision by street photographer Mitchell Funk. Funk's approach to street photography breaks with the tradition of the quick draw/ snapshot approach that is associated with the genre. Instead, he draws inspiration from studio photography. Each element of the shot is carefully composed and designed as if it were a still life in the studio. In this instance, the Deco Movie facade is as much as an abstraction as it is a representation. This photograph is an exploration into the exact design, color, and shape. In 1980, this was a revolutionary approach in color photography. Signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, other sizes available, printed later, unframed. This work is printed on fine art Hahnemuhle paper. The color will vary from monitor to monitor. Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum. Brooklyn Museum, show "Images en Couleur" . 1971 Included he was included in the visionary book "Frontiers of Photography" Time-Life. Color ! American Photography Transformed. Amon Carter Museum. He has had more than 50 Photography Magazine Covers and has had covers on Newsweek, Fortune, New York Magazine and Life Magazine among others. - We Ship Internationally !
