Meida and Bona are twins which you find very seldom among the Hamar tribe of Ethiopia. Usually twins are sent to the bush to die or to be eaten by wild animals. Culturally, Hamar people believe that one of the twins are opposites: while one has a good spirit, the other one is believed the have an evil one which would bring a curse to their village and farmland. Not knowing which twin is the evil spirited one, both are killed. Somehow the parents of Meida and Bona were able to protect them from the elders of the village.
All photographs are black and white silver prints taken using a 4 x 5 field camera (Ebony SV45 Ti) on traditional film (Kodak Tmax 400). Negatives are developed in Kodak D76 Developer 1+1 dilution. There is no digital enhancement and everything is done "in-camera". Pictures are enlarged on fibre base photographic paper (Efke Varicon Classic FB) and selectively toned with the artist's personal mixture which gives the photographs an added strength and depth. This post-production process can takes up to 8 hours and turns out differently with each print, hence making each of them unique.

Jan C. Schlegel
Jan C. Schlegel was born in 1965 in the Black Forest of Germany. He discovered his passion for photography at the age of 14 within the scope of a Photo course at school. For his first own camera, the reflex camera Minolta XG9, the 14-year-old saved long. As the winner of an AGFA photo competition with a focus on portraits, Schlegel took part in a seminar by the photographer Walter Schels in the Staatslehranstalt für Photographie in Munich. Under Walter Schel’s influence Schlegel began to ascertain his fervor for black-and-white portraits. Toni Schneiders, a distant neighbor of Schlegel, became the second important mentor for the young photographer. After a two and a half year-long apprenticeship at Lake Bodensee Schlegel was a professionally trained photographer by the age of 18. Schlegel works for the University of the Nations. He teaches courses in photography and takes students through Africa and Asia, mentoring them as they discover their way of seeing.
