Vintage Portrait of Anna Magnani - Mid 20th Century

Mid-20th Century

About the Item

Vintage Portrait of Anna Magnani is a vintage b/w photographic print on single-coated paper, realized in The Mid-20th Century Good conditions. Anna Magnani was born in Rome, Italy (not in Egypt, as some biographies claim), on March 7, 1908. She was the illegitimate child of Marina Magnani and an unknown father, often said to be from Alexandria, Egypt, but whom Anna herself claimed was from the Calabria region of Italy although she never knew his name. Raised in poverty by her maternal grandmother in Rome after her mother left her, Anna worked her way through Rome's Academy of Dramatic Art by singing in cabarets and nightclubs, then began touring the countryside with small repertory companies. Although she had a small role in a silent film in the late 1920s, Her breakthrough film was Rome, Open City (1945), generally regarded as the first commercially successful Italian neorealist film of the postwar years and the one that won her an international reputation. From then on, she didn't stop working in films and television, winning an Academy Award for her performance in the screen version of The Rose Tattoo(1955), a part that was written for her by her close friend Williams. She worked with all of Italy's leading directors of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.1

  • Terry O'Neill - Brigitte Bardot Cigar, Photography 1971, Printed After
    By Terry O'Neill
    Located in Greenwich, CT
Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot is one of the most iconic French actresses and models in the world. She is one of the best known sex symbols of the 1950s and 1960s and was widely referred to by her initials, B.B. With her heavy fringe, kohl-lined eyes, pouty lips and seductive curves, Brigitte Bardot captured the sixties bombshell zeitgeist. Like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, her image not only portrayed an era but an ideal that has remained indelibly imprinted in popular culture. This photo of French actress Brigitte Bardot in Spain, 1971 was taken on the set of 'Les Petroleuses' a.k.a. 'The Legend of Frenchie King', a western comedy film directed by Christian-Jaque. While on the set of ‘The Legend of Frenchie King’, Terry O’Neill was doing a three part series on Brigitte Bardot. This was the last frame Terry had left to use on set. The Bardot cigar shot is considered to be one of his most iconic photographs and is part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. “I noticed that when the wind gusted there was the potential for a great picture. When the time came, I only had one frame left – one shot at it. But suddenly the wind swept her hair across her face, and it was a knock-out.” -Terry O’Neill All Fine Art...
