About the Item

Ernst Haas (1921-1986) is a prolific Austrian-American photographer and photojournalist. Haas made significant contributions to the advancement of photography over the course of his career spanning 40 years. Haas is best known for his early innovation with color photography, making his name synonymous with the medium. His dynamic 1953 story on New York, "Images of a Magic City" was the primary subject for LIFE Magazine's first color issue. Additionally, in 1962, Haas' was featured in a solo exhibition, "Ernst Haas: Color Photography", and the first-ever color photography retrospective at The Met. In addition to his historic recognition, Haas is also remembered for his technical mastery. Haas is responsible for introducing his innovative use of shutter speed, which was dramatically slowed down to produce his signature blurred and impressionistic effects. While Haas only ever explored photography, he was highly experimental within the medium. Diverse in style, technique, and subject matter, Haas was eager to expand his practice, expanding the medium while pushing the boundaries of what was possible. "Hollywood California" is an evocative work that is exemplary of Haas' distinct technique and atmospheric charm. The photograph features a glamorous woman adorn in black-tie attire, her back turned to the camera as she stands in front of an energetic crowd of onlookers. Haas' signature soft blur captures the transience of the moment, amplifying the dazzling Hollywood spirit and mystique this piece evokes. In 1986, Haas was the recipient of the Hasselblad Award in recognition of his outstanding achievement. Today, Haas' work is celebrated internationally with work in public collections across the globe including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the National Museum of Art (Kyoto), and Museum Ludwig (Cologne). • Weegee "A Trip to Mars"
    By Weegee
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
While many first associate Weegee (aka Arthur Fellig) with New York City crime scenes, perhaps a broader and more consistent theme is that of spectacle and/or urban entertainment. The origins of his nick-name and reputation date back to the 1930s when he became the first New York City press photographer to obtain permission to install a police radio in his car. Following the city's first responders and documenting their duties, Weegee had unprecedented access to New York’s fires, crimes, debaucheries and of course, murders. During the first decade of his career these unflinching urban tragedy or crime images paid Weegee's bills, but as he became more financially independent he was more inspired to pursue photographs on his own agenda. While his oeuvre is vast, Weegee was especially drawn to entertainment: nightlife, circuses, the theatre, showgirls, city thrills, the cinema etc. Some of Weegee's most dynamic and tender (and under-appreciated!) images are related to simply having fun (in a crowd). He was not confined to one neighbourhood or demographic. He captured action, faces and events from Coney Island to the Bowery and Greenwich Village, to Times Square and Harlem. In “A Trip To Mars,” Weegee depicts a multi-generational group crowding around a large telescope...

  • Weegee "Sailor and Girl Kissing"
    By Weegee
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Weegee (1899-1968) was equally fascinated and inspired by cinema and all of its tangents, from Hollywood movie stars to ordinary civilians going to the movies. While Weegee is typically associated with crime/disaster images, the broad theme of "entertainment" is a major component of his oeuvre. An interesting and provocative sub-genre of his cinema-related work are his images of couples (often heavy-petting) in movie theatres. Recent scholarship has established that many of Weegee's supposed clandestine images were actually staged or arranged with friends or co-operative strangers. Nevertheless, Weegee created these photographs in the dark with an array of clever techniques including infrared film, filtered flashbulb and triangular prism lens. Employed in shots such as this one, the prism lens would allow the artist to “see around corners,” useful at times when his subjects were in compromising locations. These images of kissing couples, Weegee wrote in 1959, were “his best seller, year in and year out.” "Sailor and GIrl at the Movies...

  • Butt - H
    By Andy Warhol
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Andy Warhol began using the big-shot Polaroid camera in 1971 and continued using it religiously until he died in 1987. Despite the camera being discontinued in 1973, he continued to use it to capture the actors, artists, dancers, politicians, socialites, and factory members of his world. Frequently, Warhol's polaroids were used as preparatory works for his iconic silkscreen portraits or other artworks. They also revealed his immediate personal vision functioning as a chronicle of his surroundings and social life. In 1977, Warhol began work on two new sexually-charged bodies of work, Torsos and Sex Parts. These two series are regarded as Warhol's most daring, arguably the earliest overtly gay work in his oeuvre. Ultimately, the works in these series served to help Warhol assert his own homosexuality. Sex Parts is a series of photos featuring explicit male and female body parts, blurring the line between art and pornography. The inspiration for these works came from Polaroids that Warhol had shot through a series of photoshoots featuring models from gay clubs...
