SOREL COHEN (Canadian b. 1936 - ) A graduate of Concordia University, Cohen has been a major figure on the Canadian photography scene for over thirty years. She has been invited as guest lecturer to many Canadian universities, and was awarded the Canada Council’s prestigious Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography (1988). Her master’s thesis examined feminist art in the 1970s, while her art practice, which is largely autobiographical, weaves original links conceptual art, photography, painting and film. Cohen creates works that directly reference the historical and social context of the artist, especially through depictions of gender and the body. She has participated in numerous group shows both in Canada and abroad (France, Germany, Mexico, the United Kingdom, etc.) and has had solo exhibitions in major Canadian cities from Halifax to Vancouver, as well as in New York, Marseilles, and Tempe, Arizona. ) She was included in the show She Photographs which presented thirty photographers, mostly Canadian, a few American, who explore the portrait or the self-portrait, nudes, still-life, landscape. Artists included Sarah Anne Johnson,Jacynthe Carrier, Sorel Cohen, Éliane Excoffier, Lorraine Gilbert, Nan Goldin, Maryse Goudreau, Katy Grannan, Angela Grauerholz, Clara Gutsche, Shari Hatt, Isabelle Hayeur, Spring Hurlbut, Holly King, Justine Kurland, Suzy Lake, Laura Letinsky, Carol Marino, Julie Moos, Catherine Opie, Sylvie Readman, Alix Cléo Roubaud, Kiki Smith, Barbara Steinman, Andrea Szilasi, Marnie Weber. Her work is found in major collections, such as the Bibliothèque Kandinsky, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Gallery of Canada. In 1986, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal hosted an extensive exhibition of her work; a catalogue, Divans maudits, was published for a solo show at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris (2003). She lives and works in Montreal. Gerard Allon, photographer, born 1949, Casablanca, Morocco. Immigrated to Israel in 1974. In 1985 Allon left Israel and established himself in Canada. He became interested in holography and developed a patent for the "holoposter" .Gérard Allon (Moroccan, Israeli) was born in 1949 in Morocco, grew up in Algiers, then in France. He learned French literature at the Lille University and worked as director assistant for the cinema and the French television. At age 24 he went to Israel and made a movie on the first Jewish settlement on the Golan Heights. From 1975 he has developed an Artist photographer career. The transformation of the camera arts in Israel began in the summer of 1975 with a juried exhibition in Tel Aviv entitled Through the Lens of Immigrant Photographers. Held under the auspices of the Ministry Of Education and Culture, the exhibition included six artists selected by a jury: one of them, the then-unknown Gérard Allon. To include him was an act of almost prophetic clairvoyance, since both as an artist and a photographer, Allon was destined to play a most important role in the renewal of the art in Israel, above all in the field of commercial and fashion photography. Together with a handful of other young photographers active at the time (among them the immigrants Yosaif Cohain and Neil Folberg, and Israelis educated abroad, such as Hanan Laskin, Avi Ganor, and Micha Kirshner), Allon was instrumental in bringing much-needed foreign influences into the insular bubble of local photography.
