Newbold Bohemia
Newbold Bohemia was born in Evansville, Indiana and mainly creates photos, although his work shares as much in common with painting as it does with photography. Rather than using the camera to record the world around him, Bohemia prefers to work against the journalistic nature of photography. He creates his own world from scratch. In his studio he arranges still-lifes, builds sets, hires actors and lights the scene. After capturing the image, he often further enhances the work through digital or mechanical manipulation before printing the final work. Although not formally trained as an artist, his work is heavily influenced by his education and work in psychology, marketing and graphic design. Visual organization and storytelling are equally important to him, although one may take precedence over another is a particular body of work. His work often focuses on the everyday and mundane, as well as historical and societal references. Tension, conflict and humor are often introduced to create new ways of seeing the world we think we know. Newbold Bohemia currently lives and works in Chicago. His award-winning work has been exhibited throughout the United States. He is currently represented by the seller based in Hudson, NY.

- Secret Recipe: Contemporary Figurative Photograph of 1950's Housewife in PinkBy Newbold BohemiaLocated in Hudson, NYContemporary figurative photograph digital C-print, edition of 10 30 x 20 inches unframed This contemporary c-print pictures a classic 1950's blonde housewife hand rolling dough in a pretty pink apron. The seemingly innocent imagery is given a sinister twist when one notices the rat poison tin in the left corner. The viewer is left wondering what the woman plans to do with poison. Will she prepare it in the dough for an unsuspecting husband or neighbor? About work: Photography as a medium has a dual character. Since its introduction, artists have used it to produce both art as well as document the world around them. For Chicago artist Newbold Bohemia, photography is a little bit of both: his photo series have documented real life issues, presented in staged, then manipulated images from his imagination. In his playful yet devious new series, “In an Ideal World,” Bohemia visualizes the story of a rebellious 1950s woman in the domestic world. Even the name Newbold Bohemia is a fabrication. The artist’s namesake serves as a reminder to create art dedicated to the pillars of Bohemian society: Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love. All of these are present in his “In an Ideal World” series, set in a beautiful, idyllic version of the 1950s, where a blonde femme fatale-housewife comes to terms with life’s truths. As he captures her day to day chores, Bohemia comments on the not-so-idyllic reality of gender roles, and his heroine’s oppression and anger. Newbold Bohemia currently lives and works in Chicago. His award-winning work has been exhibited throughout the United States. Bohemia is currently represented by the seller based in Hudson NY. - Officer's Wives Club - Contemporary, 21st Century, Polaroid, FigurativeBy Stefanie SchneiderLocated in Morongo Valley, CAOfficer's Wives Club (29 Palms, CA), diptych - 1999 Edition of 23/25, 40x40cm each, installed 40x87cm, including gap. 2 Analog C-Prints, hand-printed by the artist, based on the 2 Polaroids. Signed on back with Certificate. Artist inventory number: 316. Mounted on Aluminum with matte UV-Protection. 29 PALMS, CA is a film / art piece that explores and chronicles the dreams and fantasies of a group of individuals who live in a trailer community in the Californian desert. The world depicted in the film is inspired by the photographs of German artist Stefanie Schneider in that it combines the notions of reality and fantasy and explores the resonance of both within a desert landscape and a transient culture. The characters portrayed in the film, (an actress, a singer, a DJ, a motel owner and his wife, a US army soldier, a mystic, a princess, a recluse, a movie ticket seller, two hitchhikers, a doctor, and so on), are to be played by both actors and non-actors. The story is constructed through the interpretation of real-life communications (i.e. phone calls, emails, conversations) that have taken place as the individuals depicted in the story try to make sense of events that have occurred in real life. In this sense, the story is, in part, a biography and social commentary, and the characters are the exaggerated alter egos of the individuals who play them. The structure of the plot is fairly simple. An actress working as a telemarketer is inspired by a singer who is new to town and is featured on the local radio station. The radio station runs a program for lonely hearts and a charismatic DJ uses the show to reveal the hopes and dreams of the town's “hottest women”. One night a panicked German female caller captivates the community with a painful story about a sexy “Smoke Jumper” (a mysterious and super real alpha male). Everybody in town is listening to the program and nobody is quite sure what to say. Life in general continues and we witness and explore the various interactions. The actress meets the singer and they become famous. The US Army soldier dies on his way to battle. The foreign princess discovers that the jewels she has come to sell are fake. The motel owner‘s wife has an affair with the pool boys and so on. All the while the community is united by their loyalty to the “Lonely Hearts” radio show and through the disturbing revelations of the German woman...Category
